Related: About this forumIF OBAMA WINS, IS HE POWERLESS?
I don't know guys if he wins then he won't be able to do anything. I don't even know if they'll let him leave the White House. The Repubs are going to wait for him by the back door and I bet they've already rigged the 2014 elections.
I don't know guys, is he going to be okay?

(340 posts)With more than 300 EVs thats a limted mandate. He'll be able to get some things done and not get others done.
Over 330 EVs and thats a complete mandate and he can push the message that he's secure with his position for 4 yrs, but members of the house are only secure for 2 yrs so they better get things done NOW or they will be voted out.
Under 300 is a bit more of a sticky situation. These tea party Grover Norquist loyalists will continue to be a pain in the side I fear.

(21,642 posts)It depends on how the Congressional races go. I'm hoping this will be a big wave election and we'll re-take the House. There's so much bullshit going on with the polls that I don't know if that's truly possible or not.

(340 posts)he doesn't need Congress to really be great.
if he can keep the economy improving, enact health care, and broker a deal between Israel/Palestine (easier said than done), he will go down as one of the greatest Presidents of all time.

(507 posts)If we hold the Senate AND the Senate reinstates the real filibuster where they have to hold the floor along with other reforms, he'll be pretty powerful. If we retake the House as well, he'll have more power than before. One thing that's good, he wouldn't have to deal with HRH Olympia Snowe anymore. Or use her as an excuse. Bipartisahship is the one campaign position he took that he should be pressured to dump immediately.

(157 posts)You're a mess! (And here I thought Christie was looking at Obama like that because Obama was saving the day. Turns out Christie was envisioning a well-done Obama with a nice Chianti and some fava beans!)

(23,269 posts)...Obama will be a lame duck on Nov. 7th. That can be taken a lot of different ways depending on your POV, but repugs will seize on it to block every initiative he proposes if the Dems don't win back the House. I do fear they will go insane/berserk when O is re-elected. I wouldn't put ANY dirty trick past them after this election. Remember, they are the party of Nixon and Gingrich. They WILL play dirty.

(10,857 posts)Just look at what is happening in the Senate elections. This was the best opportunity the Republicans had in fifty years to pull off a Congressional takeover of government by wielding a supermajority in the Senate.
If they could win just over half of the 23 Senate seats Democrats are defending while holding on to the ten they already have, Congress would be able to override any Presidential veto and President Obama would be irrelevant and powerless to stop a Republican agenda from being passed.
But they're not going to win half of those 23 seats. They're not going to win any of those seats. Instead, it looks like they're going to lose one or two seats of their own at best, and perhaps as many as five.
You won't see it mentioned in the press, but that is a 25-8 beatdown, a 3-to-1 rejection of Republican obstruction and rhetoric.
It would be nice to flip the House, too, but we'll probably have to wait until 2014, when the exact opposite opportunity presents itself to Democrats: the chance of a unified Democratic Presidency and Congress, with a 60-vote procedural supermajority in the Senate.

(1,846 posts)With sequestration and the end of the Bush tax cuts set for 12/31, Obama has all the leverage.
The R's will have to play ball in order to stop automatic defense cuts..
Long term the D's have an even bigger edge....demographics!
IMHO the antiseptic of the clock cleaning that is about to happen combined with knowledge of the demographic shifts in the country, America's largely white party will start thinking about how to survive.
Who knows, maybe they will actually leave their self imposed bubbles, go out to a mall, look around and see who the voters are!

(14,881 posts)The fiscal cliff is a cliff only for the GOP. For the Prez, it is a sledge hammer now poised over their heads.
The real question is will he use his sledge hammer to move truly left so we end up closer to the center than the edge of the earth? I'm hopin' so...

(8,217 posts)The 2 possible Supreme Court Seats.
That, to me is the most important thing there. Senate and Congress can do things to delay that vote, but it will happen.
To me, that is of paramount importance, I could care less if he is powerless in other things. That to me is more than half the battle as is.

(737 posts)Even if we don't, I believe he can still do some things with a majority Senate (plus the Veto Pen). It will just be more of a fight. He did get the Affordable Health Care Act passed with the cards he was dealt with. That says A LOT!

(331 posts)There are others that will get done like "The Dream Act". He is not a do nothing President even when the House and Senate are not there. He gets it done!
