Given that most people don't know who he is, Craig Mazin is kind of a big deal in his own right which allowed his dogging of Cruz to get quick attention and take off. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Mazin) He's a prominent screenwriter and a former publicity exec. for Disney; also a former WGA board-member, the former writer and host of the WGA's blog for aspiring screenwriters, and a prominent podcaster on the topic of screenwriting. The point is, he's not some schmoe--he's one of the more powerful people in the entertainment sector.
Even if Donald Trump had an equivalently powerful roommate, based on where he was educated, it would be likely that roommate would be a financier or real estate developer and not bring the public presence, social media experience or PR experience that Mazin possesses which allowed his dogging of Cruz to have legs.
As a comparison, who was Hillary Clinton's roommate at Yale? Sanders roommate at U of Chicago? If they launched a crusade against their former roommates, few people would notice. The last political candidate to have a roommate in college who was as prominent and powerful as Mazin is...was Al Gore. (and Tommy Lee Jones has/had nothing bad to say about Gore.)
