(56,582 posts)Kind of ironic... a quote falsely attributed to a liberal female politician (Marie Antoinette was the farthest-left voice in the court, and was the one who demanded the Estates be re-constituted).
Edit: thanks, k8conant: Rousseau, not Voltaire.

(114,904 posts)You're correct of course that she didn't say it, but calling her a politician and left is transferring ideology that didn't really exist. Marie Antoinette believed in the absolute power of the monarchy.

(56,582 posts)"Politician" is a stretch for any royalty, I guess, but she was definitely active in the court and was the one who convinced Louis to re-establish the Estates.

(3,030 posts)Enfin je me rappelai le pis-aller dune grande princesse à qui lon disait que les paysans navaient pas de pain, et qui répondit : Quils mangent de la brioche.*
Finally I recalled the stopgap solution of a great princess who was told that the peasants had no bread, and who responded: "Let them eat brioche."

(20,582 posts)They hate dirty money controlling the decisions of politicians that end up hurting those who can least afford it while benefiting those already at the top.
Did you know that on average the wealthy live 18 years longer than those at the bottom they're funneling their money upwards from?

... a 2014 study from Princeton University that revealed the U.S. is not a republic or a democracy, but rather an oligarchy.
An oligarchy is a form of government in which power resides in the hands of a small number of elites within a society.

Although the Rothschild family now keeps a very low public profile, they still have significant business operations across a wide spectrum of sectors. While you may not find any one particular Rothschild on the Forbes most rich list, the family is estimated to control $1 trillion dollars in assets across the globe, thus having an extemely [sic] strong voice across the geopolitical/economic spectrum that many perceive as a hidden hand manipulating events silently from behind a veil of virtual secrecy and silence.
