Related: About this forumJust watched the news. I saw Hillary attacking Donald Trump. I saw Bernie Sanders attacking Hillary.
Which side is Bernie on?

(11,990 posts)I want the American people to be voting for a vision of economic justice, of social justice, of environmental justice, of racial justice. That is the campaign we are running and that's why we are getting the support we are.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Is that how you would describe Hillary Clinton against Donald Trump, the lesser of two evils?
SANDERS: Well, if you look at -- no, I wouldn't describe it, but that's what the American people are saying. If you look at the favorability ratings of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, both of them have very, very high unfavorables. You're not going to disagree with me on that...
STEPHANOPOULOS: There's no question about that.
If you have two candidates with very high unfavorables, then you have a situation where many people are voting for, not who they like most, but who they dislike least, the less bad of two undesirable options, aka lesser of two evils. So (a) it is a reference to what many are saying, not Bernie's personal characterization, and (b) it is an aphorism where "evil" is used in the sense of "bad choice" not in the sense of someone having an evil character. So no, in no sense at all did he call Hillary evil.

(81,863 posts)I can't wait for the Trump ads featuring Bernie saying Hillary is unqualified and evil.
thesquanderer
(11,990 posts)He did not call her evil. TWO ways.
1. He was talking about how others have characterized the Trump/Clinton choice as the lesser of two evils.
2. And even then, in the context of that idiom, the word "evil" is used rhetorically. It means something you don't want. It does not mean literally Satanic. Idioms are not literal. In most cases, people are not without limbs if they pay an arm and a leg for something, and rarely are literally barking up wrong trees, for example. To declare something or someone the lesser of two evils does not mean you think either option is literally evil, but rather merely an unsatisfactory option. It's a figure of speech.

(110,159 posts)Just show the nation more of who Sanders is.
Secondly, Clinton will continue running her campaign at Trump. Showing us presidential.
I see Sanders is making the move both inside and out of the convention. The nation won't be thrilled with that either. Lighting things on fire generally causes more problems than not. But, this is where Sanders continues to misstep.

(17,599 posts)But look at some Bernie supporter posts - some supporters say they will not vote Democratic if Bernie is not the nominee.
I for one do not like to be extorted.

(6,719 posts)I watch the live streams. I understand you do not get this on MSM, but it is happening. Sanders is very against Trump.

(17,599 posts)Hillary were unacceptable to the public. Stephanopolous actually asked him if he was saying that Hillary was no better than trump? Bernie hesitated and THEN said no, Hillary was better.
Really. Is that party solidarity? I wonder what would happen if Hillary really let loose on Bernie? Would that be acceptable to his supporters?
I used to be one - no longer - mostly because of his negativity towards Hillary.
timmymoff
(1,947 posts)that's how we feel about the Clinton's, that we are being extorted. Enjoy.

(17,599 posts)recent polls show 90% of Hillary supporters will support Bernie over trump.
about 60% of Bernie supporters way they would vote Hillary over trump.
In any rational sense, anyone voting for trump could not be a liberal.
That is the definition of extortion.
timmymoff
(1,947 posts)you didn't give a definition of extortion at all. Here's mine.. foisting a flawed candidate with corporate media, the establishment, big money and lobbyist's all pulling for a candidate to keep business as usual. The extortion part is the role trump is playing to aid Hillary, we get a choice of a conservative nut job or a slightly less conservative.. that's extortion, but enjoy, as of now you can count me in the 40% you didn't mention but is there in your post. Don't you just love math? It's the math. Thank goodness I have until November to decide for who or if I will vote.

Hillary is fair game in the election, duh. That is how politics works. Pretty basic really. If she cannot stand the heat, then she should drop from the upcoming primaries.

He uses language clearly designed to encourage his supporters to withhold their support for her as the nominee.
And then he gets to act as though her weakness in GE polls - which is a function of what he's doing in the first two steps - is a valid reason for overturning the will of the voters.

But, it is politics, and this is the "game" we are watching.
I hate that she is being torn apart from both left and right, and a textbook meglomaniac gets two months to cull his party's obedient pods and chip at the "middle."
But, again ... It is what it is.
Just have to hope, against all hope, that his country is not THAT fucking stupid to elect Trump as POTUS.
