"LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Bernie Sanders predicted Monday that the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia could be "messy" as he pushed the party to adopt his progressive agenda, but added: "Democracy is not always nice and quiet and gentle."
The Democratic presidential candidate said in an interview with The Associated Press that his supporters hoped to see a platform at the July convention that reflects the needs of working families, the poor and young people as opposed to one that represents Wall Street and corporate America.
The Vermont senator said he will "condemn any and all forms of violence" but his campaign was bringing in newcomers to the process and first-time attendees of political conventions. He said the Democratic party could choose to be more inclusive.
"I think if they make the right choice and open the doors to working class people and young people and create the kind of dynamism that the Democratic party needs, it's going to be messy," Sanders said. "Democracy is not always nice and quiet and gentle but that is where the Democratic party should go."
Asked if the convention could be messy, Sanders said, "So what! Democracy is messy. Everyday my life is messy. But if you want everything to be quiet and orderly and allow, you know, just things to proceed without vigorous debate, that is not what democracy is about."

(9,359 posts)Was on the ballot. Turnout will not be as high as it was in the last two presidential elections. There isn't the same excitement as there was around Obama. When Obama ran, I couldn't walk 20 feet without running into someone who wouldn't show their enthusiasm for Obama. Now I can't walk 20 miles and find someone who is excited about Hillary.

(5,811 posts)Obama coalition so is my sister, nephew, and husband and we're all voting for Hillary in the CA primary. However, PBO will be there for the general and that will be everything. He'll make the argument for a Hillary Clinton presidency like no one else can.

(587 posts)Bernie has never had any clout. He hasn't ever passed any legislation, despite being in the senate for years. He's been almost totally ineffective in the job.
When he returns to the senate, he will have substantially less clout than he did before, because he will have pissed off quite a few of his colleagues. The only people who can vote for Sanders are Vermonters, and they have been voting for him all along. The fact that he ran and lost on the national stage gains him nothing additional. It's not like he will maintain an army of Bernbots ready to hang on his every word and vote as he says and do as he says forevermore.
He will be a small footnote on the 2016 election and he will command as much cloud as other Presidential losers like Dodd, Edwards, Kucinich or Richardson... you know... those towers of adoration within the party that wield enormous clout due to their Presidential runs..... not.

(114,904 posts)Bernie has successfully passed a lot of legislation through the amendment process. His list of accomplishments is long and reflects his progressive beliefs. He has plenty more accomplishments:

Here's why he'll return to the Senate as one of its most powerful members, dear:
<snip>
By virtue of seniority, and his willingness to belong to the Democratic Caucus, Sanders has the partys top seat on the Budget Committee. Now hes the ranking minority member, a job of minimal import in a year when the GOP majority isnt even trying to move a budget blueprint through the Senate. But hed be chairman in 2017 if Democrats win back control, which now looks probable.
.
With or without the gavel, though, hed be pressed into service early on as one of the White Houses most essential helpmates if Clinton becomes president. Whatever changes in spending priorities, entitlement programs or the tax system she proposes would get their first tests of support at the Budget panel -- right about one year from now, probably.
Sanders would have more automatic influence than hes ever had as he tried to shift a new administrations fiscal policies to the left, and then it would fall to him to take the lead in finding the votes to move Clintons fiscal policies advanced through the starting gate.

Even without this technical stuff- seniority, etc., he has a big megaphone. Those young multitudes who support him, have no intention of abandoning him. And they are organised. One tweet on any issue and he has an army of activists taking notice. Last Friday he sent an email asking his supporters to donate to Tim Canova. Today, Canova stated that he'd raised $250,000 over the weekend.
Bernie's email list and over a million donors give him a lot of power.
I could go on, but why bother. You aren't well informed enough to have this discussion.

(12,081 posts)Hillary supporters and the media are trying to portray Bernie supporters as trouble makers and dangerous people. Well if that puts us in company with the people that made trouble during the Civil Rights Movement, the Women's Rights Movement, and the Labor Movement then I count myself in good company.

We are detrimental to their corporate bottom line.
They are worried that us ruffians will sully Hill's beautiful coronation party which she has dreamed about for decades.
