2016 Postmortem

Assuming the Dems keep control of the Senate, I hope before the next session begins they decide to either eliminate the filibuster altogether or modify it so that would be obstructionists have to hold the floor to execute it. Allowing one single senator to deny legislation is just plain stupid after what we've seen the past 4 years.
I sure hope you put this on the agenda right now, Harry Reid.

(6,342 posts)The only way I see Reid even considering it is if the Democrats take back the House.
Things may get through the Senate easier, but the GOP House will kill every bill they dont like.
So it really doesn't help to use the nuclear option.

(1,416 posts)Ok, well.. my opinion may be unpopular on this.. but. here goes.. the FILIBUSTER exists in case your party is a minority in the Senate.. without it.. what the fuck happens if we Dems go back in the minority .. we would be fucked.. i think it needs to stay to protect us as well.. shit .. we don't even have the house back yet.. and even if we did.. majorities don't last forever.. now do I think it could use maybe some minor tweaks.. like yes.. you must actually get up on the floor like in the old days and talk and talk and actually be REQUIRED to literally filibuster physically.. YES.. cause that gets people's attention.. but getting rid of it completely.. no...jst my .02........

(1,044 posts)The thought of a Republican majority needing only 51 votes to approve anything scares me.
The Senate is supposed to be the "reasonable" house. They're not to supposed to be susceptible to the passions of the time. It can be infuriating sometimes, but I'm not sure I like the alternative.
