As the Democratic Primary wraps up and tensions continue to flare, Capitol Hill Democrats are quietly discussing a possible coup to oust DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.
Wasserman-Schultz, who has been seen as wildly divisive in the primary, is facing a mountain of criticism and uphill battles as she braces for a tough primary fight in Florida.
According to an exclusive, in depth report from The Hill, Democratic Senators have been meeting together to draw up a plan to force the Florida Congresswoman to resign. One Democratic Senator, who is pro-Clinton and who remained anonymous, told The Hill:
There have been a lot of meetings over the past 48 hours about what color plate do we deliver Debbie Wasserman-Schultzs head on. I dont see how she can continue to the election. How can she open the convention? Sanders supporters would go nuts.
Its worth noting that these Democratic lawmakers couldnt actually oust Wasserman-Schultz; only the National Committee could do that, and would rely on talks between Clinton and Sanders.
Another Democratic Senator echoed these sentiments, saying if the party hopes to attract young people, Wasserman-Schultz must go:
We need to get this figured out and come together. Hillarys got the nomination. She needs Bernies energy. Its time for her to accommodate. Its time to pick hard-nosed people to cut through things and figure out a deal. They [young people] need to know this is their party.

(24,979 posts)Yes, assuming this process has even started for real, she'd have to choose to give in to the pressure or let the conflict over her erupt (further) in public. That's the question. It's not like she's an independent judge or someone in a constitutional position of some kind. She's the CEO figure of a political party. Her position is supposed to be representative and unifying. If enough of the politicians she represents and unifies turn on her, she may see that position is untenable.
I say she's going to be primaried out of there regardless. (And yes, theoretically she could stay on even after Canova decapitates her!)

(1,855 posts)How about her support for republican candidates in FL?
The fact that the Party has hemorrhaged seats all over the country under her watch?
Would anything be a valid reason for you? Or is it just about supporting your "team"?

(26,549 posts)and not the decades of Republican-lite policies.
(Wonder how long it will be before someone replies with examples like the ACA, completely unaware that the ACA is Bob Dole's response to Clinton's healthcare reform efforts.)

(3,366 posts)She's a problem, but not THE problem. THE problem is Hillary, and she will not win support just because DWS is gone.
DWS has done her damage, and at HRC's behest. Taking her out now will change nothing.

(94,679 posts)The DNC chair, for all intents and purposes, serves at the pleasure of the President when he/she is a Democrat. If President Obama is willing to have her step down, it won't be a "soup"; if he's NOT willing to have her step down, there won't be a "coup" to override his opinion.

(39,215 posts)Bernie has the energy and the youth (and a bunch of us elders also). If there is any hope of keeping this party together and improve it they need to stop pushing they youth out.
After our caucus a group of us Bernie supporters were talking about what was going on. One of the elderly men told us that the last caucus he had been to was Obama with loads of excited young people. The one before that was attended only by older people mostly over 70. He was delighted to see the Bernie supporters because it meant hope for the party.
If they want a viable party the establishment needs to understand right now that they need to open the doors. No more packed committees to keep the establishment in the hands of the older generations. No more selling out to one candidate before even one debate or one vote is cast. No more early endorsements - let the people vote for their own leader. And above end the power of the DNC and state parties to override the voters and NO MORE super-delegates.
If they want any party left this had better go fairly and recognize that the youth are here to stay. They are not going away. They will be here now and in 2018, 2020.
Open the damned doors.
And i would add: if pushing from the inside isn't enough to lift it out of the neoliberal hole, what harm in some hopping out to pull from the outside? If we can get it moving, I see them climbing back on.
