2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumA kind word for Skinner, who heartily deserves it.
He had no obligation to let the Hillary/Bernie wars rage on here. It was clear in March that Hillary would be the nominee. He could have shut it down weeks ago.
He didn't, and I think he deserves a great deal of credit for that.
Skinner, fond as I am of you, I still think Discussionist is... aw, never mind. This is a post to praise not criticize.

(81,860 posts)People shouldn't underestimate how smart the admins are and how much they care about DU. On most sites you have no idea who is really in charge. I think the admins did the best they could with 2016 and that's all anyone can ask.

(4,311 posts)There are deep ideological and policy divides between the two sides.
I still don't think this was as bad as 08. I genuinely don't. I felt like I needed a shower after logging off in 08. But that could be the fact that I didn't handle 08 very well, and this time I didn't give in to my baser instincts and fly off the handle. I feel better about my own performance this primary.

(4,311 posts)but because I'm not very proud of my behaviour back then, and I'm happier with how I am online (not just DU) these days. I am older and wiser, less volatile, more polite, I think more deeply and try to be a LOT more fair.
I'm not ashamed, per se, but I also don't want to be associated with my past actions because I think and hope I have learned from them. I don't want to drag up old rivalries (although the VAST majority of posters with whom I disagreed are long gone) and I don't want to bring up bad memories for people.
All that said, I'll PM you.

(146,317 posts)I would not have been as even in allowing some things as the DU admins were. That's why I don't run a discussion forum, but merely participate in this one.
I'll be watching to see how the new rules and strategies affect discussion. It will be a big change, so we'll see what happens.

(31,700 posts)But, in 2016, Sanders is the candidate most DUers support.
The Admins of DU have always done a remarkable job with this site. Great work and good luck with your continuing efforts!
