2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumCan we please give Bernie some space? He said he will support our Hillary and I believe him!!!
I think the idea of a Donald Trump or a Ted Cruz presidency would be an unmitigated disaster for this country.

(99,710 posts)It's hard walking away.
I would be a liar if I said I thought it was close but my opinion really doesn't matter...He thinks he came close so this is painful for him.
It is also painful for him to know many of his supporters are going to lambaste him when he endorses Hillary.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)He needs space and I am willing to give it to him...
When Lee surrendered at Appomattox General Grant didn't embarrass him and let him keep his sidearm and horse.

and then want us to run their gauntlet naked
while they laugh and throw garbage at us.
Then, maybe, they'll be satisfied.
They call this "unifying the party behind Hillary".
Thanks for the OP.
Keep it up. Each time you slam Senator Sanders and his supporters, you risk losing critical votes for Secretary Clinton.

(99,710 posts)At some point he endorses Hillary and even if it's more anti-Trump than pro-Hillary that will be enough.
Cooley Hurd
(26,877 posts)Why are others still fighting the primaries? He's not. Of course he's going to the convention, but not to challenge Secretary Clinton's nomination. He's going to make sure that his voice is at least heard - and it's a good voice that adds traditional Democratic values to the platform (on top of the traditional Democratic values that Secretary Clinton will already espouse).

Renew Deal
(81,860 posts)Appear on a stage with Hillary.
Say she won fair and square (which he said about the DNC)
Say that she has his full support
Appear anywhere Hillary chooses
That would be a start.

(26,877 posts)...and will do so at the convention.

Cooley Hurd
(26,877 posts)Not criticizing Secretary Clinton anymore. He knows the primaries are over. But, he's also doing the right thing by being a trimtab for the party until the convention (thanks for the concept, Bucky Fuller).

(95,337 posts)In 2008 everyone assumed that the Democrats were split and Hillary would not endorse Obama.
In the end she gave an amazing speech at the convention and helped to unite the Democrats and help us defeat McCain/Palin.
Bernie is a good person, I've watched many of his speeches and I cannot believe that he would allow a racist, sexist, homophobic asshole to become president. And I am challenged by a democrat who would allow Trump to win.
Is Hillary the best candidate? Who knows, I was a Biden supporter. But I do know that if we can get a big turnout to help support Hillary then we may be able to retake the Senate and perhaps do some good in this country!

(68,582 posts)Three days after the last primary;she did so....The vote for the nominee is on Wednesday and Hillary Clinton speaks on Thursday. There will be no what would be essentially a campaign speech before Wednesday. He has lost influence and will continue to do so every day he delays conceding and endorsing.

(9,956 posts)...and I don't think his tendency to differ is hurting the Democratic Party. This year, with The Donald running, makes Democrats look greater.

(375 posts)of his word.
That's why I continue to support him and still think he is the best candidate in this race.
He's still fighting for his progressive agenda of better wages, breaking up the banks, civil rights, jobs, healthcare that works for all and more.
He's not about him, he's about a better country and involvement of all people, not just the establishment elite.
He's the only good thing about this Presidential cycle.
He won't tear up the party for his own glory.
But he will fight for the people of this nation and he will up to the Democratic National Convention and beyond.
That you can count on.
Settling for Hillary, is not settling for her establishment, business as usual agenda.
Demsrule86
(68,582 posts)You still consider him a potential nominee, and he is not anymore. Bernie has lost. He will not be the nominee.
wallyworld2
(375 posts)I thought it was more than that.
Like his platform is more than worthy of representation
Your post just validate Senator Sanders supporters worries, that the moment he does withdraw, his platform will be completely
abandoned and Hillary will move hard right.

I have never seen a losing candidate be afforded so much space to get over a loss. His actions are approaching childish behavior. There is the work of beating Trump to be done. It's time to get on board or go sulk in the corner. Hillary acted like an adult in 2008. Sanders needs to follow her example.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)If he wants to speak at the Convention and I am sure he does he has to endorse the nominee. That's the protocol... I just hope some of his more ardent supporters don't lambaste him.

(42,862 posts)... except that Bernie is taking advantage of it... and so are many of his followers. As he continues to "campaign", they see that as an excuse to continue to attack and smear the party and our nominee. ENOUGH!

(12,689 posts)The show will go on whether or not he endorses her, so it's no big deal. She doesn't need his endorsement to win and will win big without it.

(3,739 posts)I've seen Paul McCartney in Sacramento and then again in San Francisco and I have tickets to see him again in a brand new arena in Sacramento in October! I've seen the Stones a few times and Clapton once. Just saw The Who in Oakland a few weeks ago. They were great! I have seen so many aging 60's groups (and some 70's groups) it is crazy. But I love the music. I keep dragging my husband and friends to the concerts because "this is probably their last tour"! Have you ever seen Elton John? He is still unbelievable.

(1,507 posts)I'm a little conflicted as to the reasons. Part of me thinks it's Bernie's ego but I think the safety and well being of some of his more ardent supporters might also be playing into how he exits the race. There are people here who still believe he will be the nominee. That he will be president. That's not normal thinking given the situation, and I'd imagine Bernie knows there are people out there like that. he may be concerned about how they will react when he does end his campaign.
