Senator Ernst calls herself a combat veteran at every turn — on her Senate web page, in campaign debates, and in her stump speeches. She can say this because she served in a combat zone.

And it’s technically true. She was company commander of the Iowa National Guard’s 1168th Transportation Company during its tour of active duty in Kuwait and southern Iraq, from February 2003 to April 2004. But the unit was never in a firefight, or for that matter attacked at all; it delivered supplies, and later, guarded the front gate and ran perimeter patrol at their home base outside Kuwait City, Camp Arifjan.

Real combat veterans I spoke to don’t think much of how the Senator talks up her combat duty. Larry Hanft, for instance, who earned the Combat Infantryman’s Badge fighting in Vietnam, says, “By her definition, everybody who stepped off the plan in Kuwait is a combat veteran. Joni Ernst is using her military experience to gain a political edge and pull the wool over the eyes of the American people. She’s a fraud...” Mr. Hanft is one of Sen. Ernst’s constituents.

(For the record, I spent 4 yrs on active duty in the AF nurse corps and 8 as a reservist)

She did actually serve. If she is the VP, her biography will come out completely - and yes - Trump, who said McCain was not a hero because he got caught and a party that attacked Kerry, with his 3 purple hearts, silver star and Bronze star with valor for not really being a war hero -- will make a big deal of her military background.

However, the VP choice rarely makes a difference -- and with the addition of Ernst, they might have a historical low in government experience between them.

Fundie to the core. Ernst is big on talking points and slogans, otherwise as shallow as a Nevada alkaline flat. If she was selected, it would be for the purpose of coaxing the religious right onto the Trump bandwagon. She is stridently anti-choice, a position that would not serve any national ticket well at this point in time time.

Many years ago when I as a kid we had rainboots and snowboots that we put on over our shoes. Even newish ones would leak before too long so the breadbags were put on over the shoes before your foot went into the boot. As you said, it had nothing to do with being poor we were in a solidly middle class area and everyone's mom did this (and when we complained nearly every kid on the street had a mom who reminded them that she "grew up in the Depression and we took care of our things...&quot

It was a sign you were growing up when you finally got a pair of boots that you didn't put over your shoes - I think I got my first pair in 6th grade.

She has a future in the Senate. She may be a right wing nut job, but she speaks well and has a lot of charisma. She is actually educated with a Master's degree, so she isn't exactly Sarah Palin. Ernst's political views are atrocious, but republicans love her. It would be a mistake for her to get on a ticket with Trump. She would be better off passing and waiting for another ticket, which I think is highly likely to be in her future.

Jul 2016

A lawsuit alleges that Republican Senate candidate Joni Ernst witnessed an instance of sexual harassment while she was serving in the Iowa state legislature, but did nothing to stop the behavior.

The allegations are included in a lawsuit filed by a former staffer for the Iowa Republican Senate Caucus, Kirsten Anderson. Anderson, 35, is claiming that she was fired because she complained to her superiors about sexual harassment she witnessed.

Ernst is not named as a party to the suit. She is only mentioned once in the lawsuit, which was first reported by the Des Moines Register.

“By way of just one example, Sen. Joni Ernst of Red Oak and Sen. Sandra Greiner of Keota witnessed sexual innuendo and inappropriate behavior exhibited by their male colleagues and did and said nothing while female staffers stood by unable to say anything,” the suit says.

Ernst denied the allegations and suggested they were politically motivated.
