If the "rebel" Labour MPs quit Labour and formed their own party...

...in the short run they'd be the official opposition(if recognized as such by the speaker), but how large a chunk of the actual Labour vote would they take with them?...

And are they bloodyminded enough to try it?

I suspect not very many. The thing is most ridings are partisan and safe Tory/Labour/SNP. IMO most people vote for the party as opposed to individual, so if they get replaced with someone else who has Labour beside them, people will vote for the Labour person over the current MP.

It may actually help Labour if these guys form their own party. Tories under Cameron actually moved to the "center" and took over the "New" Labour voters that brought in Blair in power. Tories are expected to go further to the right, and clear opposition by the Labour without the baggage of blairities might bring back lost working class voters.
