How the FBI’s Clinton E-Mail Decision Just Changed the 2016 Race

Trump is left with no choice but to attack the judicial process itself as corrupt.

By Michael C. Bender

Donald Trump lost one of his sharpest attacks against Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid after the FBI director said Tuesday the presumptive Democratic nominee shouldn’t face criminal charges over her e-mail practices while serving as secretary of state.

But Director James B. Comey also provided potentially damaging fodder for Trump to continue to vilify Clinton, whom Trump is seeking to brand as “crooked.” While Comey said “no reasonable prosecutor” would bring charges, he described her and her aides’ use of e-mail as “extremely careless.”

After Trump called Clinton “guilty as hell” during his campaign and said she deserved to go to jail, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee was left with no choice on Tuesday but to attack the judicial process itself as corrupt.

“The system is rigged,” Trump wrote in one Twitter post within minutes of Comey’s announcement, the speedy response underscoring the political importance of the decision. “FBI director said Crooked Hillary compromised our national security. No charges. Wow! #RiggedSystem,” Trump wrote in a second tweet.

People like and respect the FBI. DoJ? Yeah you can go after them (that's been a slow news topic for them for years) but the FBI is a no-no. Unless you have nothing else.

The FBI and CIA (most people don't know the difference) are constantly being portrayed as shadowy secretive government organizations that may be hurting the American people more than they are helping them.

And Trumo's entire campaign thus far has been anti-government, anti-"system", anti-"establishment" and anti-"them". It's always been "They're out to get us. Everybody is corrupt". So I think bringing the FBI into that seems pretty natural.

Not like attacking the FBI is going to gain him new supporters, but I doubt it will cost him any either.

found guilty of fraud in the Trump University case? OR, if he's found innocent? Unfortunately, that case will not be decided before the election.

morning. Appears this was crafted to placate the Right Wing Anti Clinton people in his party. Remember the parsing used in the Whitewater Joke, purposely to leave a talking point for the Wing Nuttery down the road.

Who cares what he thinks? Every time he makes the claim that the judicial system is rigged, he should be reminded that he's also a birther. His opinion is worthless.

Does anyone believe that Comey (a Republican) would vote for a birther like Trump?

I expect it to do the same this time. James Comey is a respected republican public servant who would have recommended charges if he felt they were reasonable.
