House Republicans want FBI to investigate Clinton again

07/11/16 10:40 AM—UPDATED 07/11/16 01:04 PM

By Steve Benen

When expectations are high, the sting of disappointment is more intense – and as we’ve seen in recent years, many Republicans don’t handle disappointment well.

The pattern is hard to miss. In 2012, Republicans could have believed the poll showing President Obama favored to win, but they convinced themselves the polls were “skewed” and were crushed when Mitt Romney lost. GOP observers could have listened to legal experts who said the Affordable Care Act would clear Supreme Court scrutiny, but they convinced themselves that “Obamacare” was unconstitutional and were inconsolable when the rulings were issued.

In the case of Hillary Clinton’s email protocols, it’s the exact same dynamic. Every objective, independent observer tried to explain that there was no realistic chance she’d be indicted, but Republicans, confusing dreams with facts, once again convinced themselves that the Democratic candidate was not only a brazen criminal, but would soon find herself behind bars.

When FBI Director James Comey disappointed them, congressional Republicans quickly threw together a haphazard hearing, which inadvertently had the effect of helping the target of their ire. Such irrational behavior sometimes feeds on itself, leading to related lapses. As the Washington Post reported, House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), who’d initially said he’d accept Comey’s findings, now wants the FBI to launch a brand new anti-Clinton investigation.

I hope we aren't treated to another expensive investigation, but if we are, I hope it back fires on them and helps load both houses with Democrats.

let's GOTV for Dems in 2016 rather than passively accepting republican bullshit.

One of the worst of them, Sen Chuck Grassley, has a tough competitor this year. This is the year we retire him.

when more than half of the indie vote does not find her trustable, and when more and more people are looking at this election as between to lesser of two evils, it is really hard to grow excitement.

Don't forget, there is a chance that Trump can win. Unless he quits over the next few days.

Give them control of ANY part of the government, and they ensure that part of the government does not work.

Period.

But hey, I get it ... some Dems think we should cower in fear of what the GOP is going to do and then let them dictate which candidates we run or not.

I am saying that the attacks we have witnessed to date are nothing compared to what they will pull if she is president. I am also saying that some on the fence voters may not vote at all because they find both candidates unacceptable. A whole slew of people don't want to have anything to do with four more years of partisan scorched earth tactics.

I only hope enough voters realize that while both candidates are not liked by the majority of people, one of them Is certifiably insane and would threaten world peace, such as it is today.

Uh, the Republicans would've done the same to whoever was the Democratic nominee. Ever since Bill Clinton, their mission is to try to destroy whoever is the Democratic candidate/president, at all costs. Don't be so naive to believe that Sanders would've escaped, unscathed. The fact is, they would've dug up any scandal on him, real or imagined. The truth doesn't matter to them, just as long as they can make the Democrats appear undesirable and incompetent.

Such as gun control, creating jobs, and voting on judicial appointments as they are spending trying to prop up this non scandal investigations we would have less gun violence and good paying jobs rebuilding our infrastructure. It would be a win-win for the country and themselves. Proves we need to vote them out and put in members who wants to work.

The Republicans are planning on 5 more investigations of the investigation, in the perpetual self delusion that this time they will hit the mother lode of delicious Clintonian villainy so they can gleefully burn her at the stake. Idiots! They're made a thriving -- and quite profitable -- cottage industry on building their twisted conspiracy theories on everything from Whitewater, to Christmas cards, to Benghazi... and every single one of their pettifogging melodramas has fizzled to an ignominious end.

On observation, since they have no interest in governing (and are quite inept at the job anyway) I suppose these endless dioramas depicting Republicans trying to appear sane, cogent and concerned, at least distract them from shutting down the government or passing some horrendous legislation intended punish whole swaths of Americans they deem as unworthy.

Cummings to Chaffetz: Criminal Referral “Unwarranted” ....

Press Release
Cummings to Chaffetz:
Criminal Referral “Unwarranted” After Learning New Facts at Today’s Hearing With FBI Director

Washington, DC (July 7, 2016)—Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to Chairman Jason Chaffetz regarding his statements at today’s hearing that he is considering sending a referral to the FBI to investigate whether former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton lied when she testified before Congress that she did not send or receive emails marked classified.
“When you made these statements regarding the classification markings at the beginning of the hearing, we had not yet heard key details about this issue from Director Comey,” Cummings wrote. “As the hearing pressed on, however, we learned some significant new facts.”

On Tuesday, Director Comey stated: “Only a very small number of the emails containing classified information bore markings indicating the presence of classified information.”

During today’s hearing, Director Comey testified that he was referring to only three emails out of more than 30,000; that the classification markings on these three documents were not proper and did not comply with federal guidelines or manuals; that he believed it would be a “reasonable inference” for Secretary Clinton to have “immediately” concluded these documents were not classified; and that he was not informed that the State Department reported yesterday that these emails were not in fact classified and included stray classification markings because of “human error.”
“I understand that there was some confusion about this issue going into the hearing, but the facts that were established helped clarify this issue, and for that reason today’s hearing served a valuable purpose,” Cummings wrote. “Based on this testimony, it appears that proceeding with a criminal referral in light of these new facts would be unwarranted.”

We all KNOW the Rethugs would rather finance a witch hunt than to do what they were ELECTED to do. Like, you know, vote on bills. But NOOOOOOOOOOO, that's not as much fun as a witch hunt!

With all the focus here on the Dem platform, we need to have a look at the R platform. If nothing there makes it glaringly obvious we MUST GOTV not just this year, but EVERY year, I don't know what will.
