http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/07/17/scott-baio-was-hand-picked-by-a-very-desperate-trump-to-speak-at-his-d-list-rnc.htmlHe had promised an all-star gathering of winners the likes of which youd never seen, name-dropping A-list luminaries such as the Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger, as well as decorated coaches Mike Ditka and Bobby Knight.
And he gave us Antonio Sabato, Jr. and Scott Baio.
Yes, on Saturday nights edition of the Fox News program Justice with Judge Jeanine, Baio announced that hed been personally selected by presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump to speak at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. And, judging by Baios description of the hasty invite, it seems not only that hes been in part supporting Trump for the subsequent media exposure hes received, beaming over the amount of interviews hes conducted since his endorsement, but also that Trump is desperately scrambling for any sort of celebrity cachet he can inject into his stale RNC lineup.
Its been fantastic, Judge. It started with you, and from that Ive gotten so much time to talk about Donald Trump, a man that I believe in, and Ive done I dont know how many interviews, and radio, and print, and things like that, said Baio. I was at a fundraiser for Mr. Trump the other night with my wife, and he invited me to speak at the conventionwhich was completely unexpected and out of left field. I mean, he had given a speech and he was walking out and I looked at him and I said, Mr. Trump, Scott Baio , and he said, Oh my god! And he said to me, Do you want to speak? and I said, Here? and he goes, No, no, at the convention! And I went, Ugh o okay, and we went inside the house where the fundraiser was.
Baio, who made a name for himself starring as ladies man Chachi on the sitcom Happy Days and its spin-off Joanie Loves Chachi, and later as the title character on Charles in Charge, claimed hell be speaking Monday night at around 8 oclock, adding, I dont know exactly what it is that Im talkin about [at the convention].
...just writes itself, doesn't it?...

(8,971 posts)His complete lack of talent notwithstanding, Baio is a perfect celebrity match to follow Clint Eastwood's empty chair routine from 4 year ago, since he's guaranteed to make Clint look great by comparison.

(22,052 posts)At the Republican National Convention in 2012, on the night that Mitt Romney was to be acclaimed as the Republican nominee for president, I was a bit nervous when Clint Eastwood came onstage with the chair. Instinctively, I knew he was going to use it as a metaphor for President Obama, as if Mr. Obama was an empty suit. Mr. Eastwood is tremendously successful at communicating; it's why his movies have been so successful. So, as he came onstage, I was worried.
Obviously, my concerns were unnecessary and the result will be part of political lore for generations. It has struck me as incomprehensible that the Republicans let Mr. Eastwood step on the climax of their convention and push Mr. Romney's acceptance speech past the broadcast window. It was completely inept on several levels.
But it's also struck me that if they had done it right, my concerns might have been realized. If the RNC planned their timing in the broadcast cycle and coordinated the chair bit with Mr. Eastwood, and if he had scripted the comedy sketch instead of improvising it, the introduction could have been a devastating presentation.
Lastly, it's struck me repeatedly that Republicans think that celebrities should stay out of politics and that Hollywood Liberals, like Barbara Streisand, Susan Sarandon and Oliver Stone to name a few, should just shut up with their leftist opinions. Of course, if their names are Ronald Reagan, Phil Robertson or Scott Baio (Ha Ha), then their opinions are very important.

I wondered "Who is this guy?' and now i know, some complete asshole from Hollywood.

(135,425 posts)Apparently it was a photoshopped image of Clinton in front of a banner for the Country Party in Canada or somewhere. You can only read the first part of the banner, the -ry is not visible. She's positioned so that the "O" in the first word is obscured.
Not even subtle.
Then his wife got on facebook or something and spewed the most foul invective (using that very C word and worse) at the critics of her husband--it was a real shitstorm!
But hurrah internet--people scooped up that stuff and didn't let them play the delete game. Unnh unnnh unnnnnh!!!!!
They sound like a CHARMING couple.....

Very witty man, he is.

Those discussions were more about "process" than goal, IIRC, (i.e. everyone was in the same boat, they just couldn't agree re: the best course to navigate to reach port) but they did get heated for some. When you care about an issue it is sometimes a challenge to disagree without getting disagreeable.
Have you heard from him at all, or has he become a whisp in the internet ether?

(47,209 posts)I don't know the details of what went down, but I know quite a few LGBTs who dissapeared at that time, a few are good friends I managed to stay in touch. None of us ever had the impulse to dredge it up. I'm just grateful to know them, some of my fave real life people, including Swag and Progmom are the best friends and cats sitters I could ever hope for.
