(42,770 posts)Hillary Clintons veepstakes is ending the way it began: with the humble-but-sturdy Tim Kaine sitting at the top of her list.
After an extensive, months-long process during which the campaign considered a host of different options -- even vetting a serious candidate from outside the political arena -- the squeaky-clean Virginia senator, whose biggest liability to emerge was that he was boring, is emerging as Clinton's top choice. Kaine has been urged along by two men familiar with the demands of the job: President Barack Obama and former president Bill Clinton, those close to the process say.
And after Donald Trumps somewhat more polished performance Thursday night, even Democrats who had been pushing for a flashier choice like Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren or New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker were sobered by the challenging four months ahead. After last night, she needs to make the safest choice possible, said a former senior White House aide.

(11,647 posts)He's solid if not flashy and unexciting. But that last paragraph irks me... did anyone in the world watch that fascist diatribe and think... "we need Tim Kaine"...

(27,574 posts)but seriously, unless they lock Perez, or Kaine in Hillary's plane bathroom with a raincoat over their head, we should know pretty soon... unless it's Warren. She will already be in Florida.

(13,431 posts)I am having trouble identifying what value he adds to the ticket. We're going to win Virginia easily without him and by easily I mean by a margin larger than Obama's 2012 margin. Does he help bring aboard white men which is Hillary's weakest demo? Is he a pit bull in disguise who can really tear into Trump? I am at a loss trying to understand the benefits of adding him to the ticket.

(10,847 posts)He is a comfortable pick for moderates in the party (and there are many) and independent moderates. Most importantly, he will bring 13 electoral votes from a southern swing state. Virginia is NOT a sure thing without him. It is much more of a sure thing now.
He is a solid Democrat. I'm very ok with the pick. Warren would be a good choice to shake things up, but then we would risk losing the Senate seat which is more important for her to have than a VP chair.
As for Progressives, the internal numbers must show that she is safe with them. I bet the campaign was thinking that a boring but steadfast Democrat would be helpful for Ohio and Pennsylvania.
We shall see.....

(47,602 posts)is exactly what the campaign wants. It generates publicity and excitement. Anything that looks too obvious could be a ploy.
That's okay, a little excitement is fun.
