Casual Thought

I've had my differences with some of the things Obama has done in office, especially in civil liberties. But the invitation his campaign extended to Republicans to launch their War on Women ™ ought to rank as one of his greatest achievements. It's penetrating now even to the lowest-information American just how fanatical, and misogynist, and ignorant, and authoritarian, the current crop of Republicans is. And no amount of finger-pointing by Dems would have conveyed this with an ounce as much impact as the Republicans themselves trumpeting who, and what, they are.

That this happened before an election in which, in a normal year with a struggling economy, Republicans would be in good shape to seize all three branches of government, is a public service that ought to get Obama's face on Rushmore. The people now driving the Republican bus have always been scarifying, intolerant zealots, but now a lot more people know it. I hope they continue to stand, noisily, for what they believe in, despite the temporary damage to thinking people's sanity it entails. The more noise, the bigger the repudiation in November.

1. Obama Didn't Draft All These Regressive Bills...

That responsibility belongs solely with the rushpublicans and their teabagger "allies" who elected large rushpublican majorities in state houses across the country who are trying to outdo one another on so many levels. From busting unions to "papers please" bills to disenfranchising voters to transvaginal probes there's been no limit to the over-reaches that have been going on across the country.

As Tip O'Neill said..."all politics are local" and the fact that so many of these regressive bills are in "battleground states" has been like a gift to President Obama. Be it Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona, Colorado and even Texas, rushpublicans have gone out of their way to alienate large voting blocs and now taunting them with their actions. And let's not forget the damage being done by the rushpublicans in the House who want to eliminate Medicare and Medicaid. David Axelrod and David Plouffe couldn't have asked for better gifts to work with...now let's see how they build on it...

It's not like Obama planned it this way. The wingnuts simply can't help themselves and end up overreaching every.single.time. Elections like 1994 and 2010 and the consequences thereof need to emphasized to every single person whom claims that a.)there is no difference between the two major parties and b.)voting doesn't make a difference

The Dems are far from perfect in a lot of respects but the Dems spent the previous two years in office trying to reform the health care system, staunching the bleeding from the 2008 meltdown, etc. NOT trying to defund Planned Parenthood and introduce a rash of anti-abortion/anti-contraception bills. This kind of stuff only seems to happen- or get significant prominence- whenever the Repubs are in charge. People ought to have learned this by now. Preventing this kind of junk from even being seriously considered would be so much easier than having to waste actual time debating it after the elections are over.

3. The Blame Game Begins...

Mar 2012

This is the first step in the rushpublican game of blaming others and absolving themselves of what they see as a big loss coming. It's almost like a 12-step denial...the first is finding reasons to make themselves victims of circumstances that just sorta happened. It was some master conspiracy behind it all and that's why whatever conveluted and bass-ackwards positions they hold weren't repudiated. We'll see the knives come out later...right now it's CYA time. Or if they win, then they'll claim they overcame tremendous odds. It's what opportunists do.

The over-reaches of the last 2 years will have long-lasting implications. They'll find out it was short term gain for long term pain. Instead of governing, the rushpublicans have and will remain in constant campaign mode and their promises get more unrealistic and outlandish...

Cheers...

5. Couldn't agree more

My only question is are they really in denial about what they are doing or are they basically conducting a political equivalent of a scorched earth/kamikaze run before November (and, hopefully, their demise)? After all, it's always easier to get something into law (assuming favorable political circumstances) than to get it repealed later- though I doubt that many of the laws that they're trying to push now will enjoy long-lasting popularity.

7. Pissing Match...

Mar 2012

We've seen the rushpublicans push themselves further and further right...a can-you-top-this game of absurdity. It's been fueled by hate radio who have prodded a lot of the extremism and quick to blast those who don't appear "conservative enough". They claim they lost in '08 cause McCain wasn't "conservative enough" or that boooooosh was either. Thus this is turning into a scortched earth campaign of party purity and cleansing. They're so certain that what's gone wrong is because we didn't have a "real" conservative" and that definition changes as the pissing match gets more intense.

Even with a majority in the Senate (which wouldn't be 60), there's no way they will be able to repeal the AHCA. The courts, on the other hand, could throw a lot of wrenches into its implementation. That's why re-electing President Obama is very important...I dread the thought of a Millard or Rectorum naming the next SCOTUS associate justice.

Cheers...

they don't care about most peoples' wallets outside of their rhetoric. Remember, some of them actually feel like most of us pay too LITTLE taxes and the "bane of taxes" Grover Norquist didn't have any problems with refusing to extend the payroll tax cut (presumably, because it would affect mostly non-wealthy individuals). And yes, they definitely want government in women's vaginas and people's bedrooms in general.
