2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumCheck in if MSNBC Has Totally Lost You As A Viewer
I used to watch pretty faithfully, but this election cycle has put me off that network.
I don't need to recite all the reasons why that is, because those reasons are obvious to anyone who has watched their convention coverage this week. What an embarassment they have become - an echo chamber of self-aggrandizing pundits peddling their opinions to dozens of viewers. I like to say they've become Fox News with a few minority and gay pundits thrown in to give them cover, and an appearance that they are different than the other cable networks.
I'm all for balance, but it's one thing to air different views, something else to overcompensate by looking for fault in every positive story coming out of a political event.
I'm done. It's C Span for me, CNN if I want to see fancy charts and graphics.

(383 posts)First O'Donnell shut her down, then she went to Todd and he pretty much shut her down also. finally she gets validation for her stupid remarks from (wait for it) George W. Bush's spokeswoman. Rachael's problem is that she is reading too many of MSNBC's full page ads about how intelligent she is. The truth is, she's not smart enough to critique Bill Clinton's speeches.

I thought I went through a parallel universe, when FOX actually handled the debate rather professionally.
Well, to keep context... MSNBC was so poor, anything would have been better.
MSNBC is trying to subtly change their format, on the hope they keep and transform their viewers.
It's just horrible now.

(23,728 posts)Keith and Rachel were my go to commentators for news and information. But they got rid of Keith, and I understand he was very difficult to work with, and I think he was going off the rails a little bit at the end. I don't know if it was his father's failing health and then dying or what, but he just was a little off.
Rachael,.....I don't know. I still have a lot of respect for her, but I just think she is following orders of her corporate masters. Keith wouldn't do it and he was let go. I think Rachael walks a fine line, but you know, we need a champion for the Left. Someone like she was at the beginning. Someone who calls out the RW hypocrisy and lies, who calls out the bad actors. But it's not going to happen. They let her do some special reports, like Flint Michigan and Gov Rick Synder's incompetence. And she did a big one on the environment. But they're not letting her get into the down and dirty. Maybe she doesn't want to. Maybe she's happy with the role she's playing. After all she's the biggest news draw of all NBC/MSNBC/CNBC line up. So maybe she's content. If so, we've lost our champion.
Last night's call out of Bill Clinton was strange. Frankly I was getting a little bored with the beginning, but maybe I'm just not used to good ole country story telling. But her remarks about it being sexist were out of left field. And she was visibly annoyed, to the point that Brian Williams threw a question at Lawrence O'Donnell just to get the camera off her. It was a moment.

(2,542 posts)When Sanders' staff went on TV and tried to pretend like they never tried to compete in the southern states, which Rachel Maddow had actually covered them doing on her show weeks prior, she appeared to sober up and dialed the bias back. But after that she was protecting her journalism when his campaign tried to imply that he didn't try to compete in those states, which totally contradicted her reporting. It wasn't until after Bernie's campaign tried to sandbag her that she checked her bias. After Bernie responded to Trump's abortion fiasco with "now can we move on to something important" , she started to be more fair to Hillary.

Add to that - Rachael, Laurence, being well past their sell by date and knuckleheads like boy wonder Chris Hayes opining when he should be in the shallow end of the pool and you have a network that has one foot on the dock and one foot in the boat. We all know that can't last long.

(16,254 posts)I used to love watching Rachel, but I couldn't stand her saying the same thought but in 3 different sentences. Drove me bananas.
It had also started turning into a RW-leaning channel and my b/p objected. In order to live longer, I shut them out.

(8,704 posts)The racist stunt they pulled on Melissa Harris-Perry.
The far right idiots they put on for example, Nicole Wallace a person who worked for one of the most un-American Presidents.
The right wing pos Scarborough scumbag is what people have been calling that idiot.
Everybody already makes fun of the Faux News, and everybody knows it's right wing propaganda.

That editorial position can lead a network to cater to a section of it's viewing audience that they can't afford to lose in a manner that ticks off other viewers. From what I have read here on DU, it sounds like that is what is happening.

(11,243 posts)I am not a huge cable news fan, but I have been tuning in for convention coverage. I did not consciously decide to watch CSPAN and CNN. I would start on MSNBC and after 10 minutes think, Oh hell no! and switch.
Also, I like Van Jones on CNN.

(34,466 posts)The other night. She stood her ground but it was rude. No show should have such a gender imbalance. If I wanted to watch that dynamic, I'd tune into Morning Joe.

(21,786 posts)I find the obsession with cable news that a lot of people here have to be rather quaint, honestly (and indicative of how old the overall DU demographic is; the median age for the audience of all three major cable news networks is over 60).
spooky3
(34,466 posts)Skew younger, but does that mean young people are less smart than older ones? It's not as if people who are not watching political shows are all out there working, volunteering, creating great art, etc.
Spider Jerusalem
(21,786 posts)I haven't watched the news on TV pretty much ever, I prefer to read (and everyone has a smartphone these days, it seems like, so most people are probably getting their news online).
spooky3
(34,466 posts)Know that many people watching the cable news shows are not also reading news online just as you do? And maybe many younger people are watching reality or other shows on tv rather than reading news online?
My point is that you shouldn't be taking a swipe at people based on demographics and you don't know what most people not watching these shows do.
Spider Jerusalem
(21,786 posts)I know more young people aren't watching TV because I pay attention to the data on media consumption patterns. Cable TV viewers tend to be old, this is a fact. DU members also tend to be old (every poll I've seen of "how old are you" on this site has a majority in the over-50 bracket). Stating an obvious fact isn't "taking a swipe at people".

(254 posts)I feel the same way. WTF? Rachel has gone off the deep end in her non stop putting down every democrat who happens to give a speech. What does she expect? It has been MSGOP for a while now but THIS convention does it for me too. I will watch live on CrubluSPAN. However, I will not watch when they have a never ending angry tea partiers calling in to trash our candidate.

(1,926 posts)I now watch CNN.
I am sure Bernie was a novelty, and talking about him was cool in the beginning. When the bosses realized if Bernie won, and got the money out of politics, as he said he would, and began gaining ground on HRC he had to be stopped. At any cost.
The cost was my viewership.
Hello CNN and your straight faced lying "conservative" commentators. Conservatives who push an economic system where most of us are victims to a handful of powerful elites. Guests and pundits who spout open unchallenged lies about everything from Reagan to healthcare. Not like you do a body count of the victims in the states like Texas where the governor refused to expand Medicaid and thousands upon thousands died needlessly.
We (us viewers who like to watch tv) are so screwed by the corporate media it makes me sick.

(402 posts)MSNBC pretty much lost me months ago. I was sickened by the continuous Trump coverage, the all in for Hillary coverage and the ignore Bernie (non) coverage. Yep, there are much better news sources if one is really interested. Check out FSTV or RT. Both are heads above MSNBC. Cspan is good also. PBS is ok but I have to question a network that has the Koch brothers as big contributors.

I cut the cord with the cable company - my cable connection is Internet only.

(32,727 posts)CNN has a more diverse panel, although they have one or two disgusting regulars (like that disgusting racist cop Harry Houck). At the same time, it's hard to throw away anchors that I've watched for over 10 years. I like to hear what Joy Reid, Lawrence O'Donnell, Rachel Maddow, Chris Hayes, and even Chris Matthews has to say.

& basically don't watch if they don't have a good panel -- & am really shocked that they go so far for youth w/o any real background in politics, & especially history.
I found the commentary about conventions, e.g, as notable for showing how none of them had any knowledge of anything that hasn't happened in the last 8 years (at most). They showed no understanding of past campaigns that speak to the issues
& little things -- like, when Cruz dissed NYCity, I never heard ANYONE mention Al Smith's election & how anti-city/anti-immigrant that GOP was; or Wm Jennings Bryan, "the cities will die" in 1896

I haven't watched MSNBC in over a year. I just got sick of all the 'inside baseball' stuff.
Also got tired of people saying stuff like 'turn on Keith now' or 'turn on Rachel now.'
We need to hear different people's points of view. We need to listen to each other.
Fox is factless, baseless hate filled propaganda.
MSNBC is overheated rhetoric, talking about a lot of stuff that no one cares much about.

(899 posts)At best, they were CNN light ~ at worst, they were auditioning for FOX. There are not always two different sides to a story ~ well, there's a right side and a wrong side. MSNBC likes to portray them as equal. I have found all of them to be entertainers, not journalists or reporters, and certainly not deep thinkers.

(27,315 posts)Too many reasons, but I stop watching months ago because I got tired to see a Trump rally each time I was connecting to see it.
I understand by reading DU it is not going any better, and as in addition, they have not been able to get with an Android app that works, there is no chance I will come back any time soon.
I am avoiding CNN as well as much as I can, because I am tired to see panels with Trump surrogates that can spew their lies without anchor people intervening.
