2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWho might play Donald Trump in Hillary Clinton's debate prep?
In 2008, Jennifer Granholm played Sarah Palin in VP prep sessions. John Kerry played Romney in the 2012 sessions.
I think Al Franken would be a fine choice to play Trump. Show business background, white male, and has the capability to fire off outlandish statements that Clinton is forced to respond to. He is also a huge Clinton fan and would want to ensure she is fully challenged and prepared before taking the stage with Trump.

(456 posts)Although they were far from my political views. Reagan, Bush 41 & 43 were respectful and serious about the presidency. Oh boy. I'm just one vote. Hillary has it. That's all I can do.

(58,785 posts)like Barney Frank for the role. Very fast on his feet, I bet he could deliver what seem to be numbingly stupid responses with traps that'd keep her on her toes.

(1,184 posts)Judd Gregg played Al Gore in 2000. Paul Begala played Bush.
I seem to remember reading that David Axelrod played McCain in 2008, but I might be wrong.
It's a different ballgame with Trump because he has no shame about saying things that are ridiculous enough that they can't be checked in realtime yet seem plausible to unsuspecting idiots. Were I on Clinton's team, I would ask her debate partner to level absolutely unsubstantiated charges that she would be forced to respond to on the fly.
This sort of thing: "My people are telling me emails are out there that say the State Department was paying money to news networks for positive coverage of Secretary Clinton. The emails are out there, folks, and the American people are sick and tired of Hillary Clinton getting a break from the media."
Essentially, Clinton's people have to be really smart and clever about debate prep. Debating a traditional figure means the game is played a certain way, but Trump has no sense of decorum or honesty. Classical military theory vs. guerrilla warfare.

(3,428 posts)I cannot say why he would be the perfect person to play Trump because TOS forbid me from doing so, but if you know anything about the things Rendell says about fellow Dems and women, then you know what I mean.

(4,490 posts)Triumph is a great choice too Either way, someone able to fire off ridiculous and insulting statements would be some good practice so the sheer stupidity of Trump doesn't stun her into silence, or derail whatever message she wants to convey. Colbert would be good too.
