I'm confused. Didn't the Stones tell the Trump campaign not to use their music anymore?

I was watching MSNBC and Chris Matthews had Hallie Jackson on, live from a Trump rally in Florida. Today, August 3rd. I counted THREE Rolling Stones songs, "You Can't Always Get What You Want," then the oldie "Tell Me (You're Coming Back)," and another oldie - "Heart of Stone," played for the audience while they were waiting for the star of the show to arrive.

And of course, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" was played at the GOP CONvention.

Didn't the Stones issue a statement awhile back, telling the Trump campaign not to use their tunes? Or did I imagine that?

Normal people would interpret that to mean "Don't do it anymore," but the Trump campaign isn't normal.

His campaign, and the various venues where he has held his rallies, likely purchased licenses from ASCAP and BMI. Thus Trump probably had licenses to use the copyrighted works. There may be a claim of false endorsement, but such a claim would be thin given that it is pretty clear to most rationale people that the Stones aren't endorsing Trump.

Yes, a lot of music is licensed automatically, but if a band withdraws permission from a specific person / group / venue, then they can't play it. This is due to the "endorsement" angle.

Few have the power to enforce it, but the Stones' might have the bucks and the staying power to battle it out. I kind of hope they do.

Basically all a band to do in that case is indicate they aren't supporting the candidate but they have no legal recourse.

This is a dumb feature of every election cycle.

With few exceptions, even those artists who own the rights to their recordings (which is a minority of recording artists) have signed contracts with licensing companies like ASCAP.

ASCAP provides a standardized set of fees and contracts by which you, Trump or Satan can pay standard fees for the use of recorded music for events, films, TV shows, etc..

You can get full access to the ASCAP catalog for non profit events for pocket change. We're talking like 50 bucks here.

The artists have NO say in the matter whatsoever.

Now there is a slight chance that if the music is featured in such a way that it implies an endorsement by the artist, then there might be a non-copyright based claim but, long story short, that is not the situation here.

It's a stupid ritual that gets trotted out during every election.

and let people know that they didn't give him permission and they don't support him. (Which they have done.) Add the Stones to the list of bands who have told Trump they don't want him to use their songs...The Stones, Queen and the widow/estate of Beatle George Harrison. Third Eye Blind singer was on TV during the week of the GOP convention to say they do NOT support Trump.
Odd choice of a Stones song "You Can't Always Get What You Want"? And they played it the first time Trump appeared with Pence at a rally. HILLARY/KAINE 2016

is why he keeps playing "You Can't Always Get What You Want" at all his rallies regardless of whether he has the legal right or not. It's a strange campaign trail song. Of course I guess it's better than playing "End Of The World As We Know It" by REM which I heard playing at one of his rallies. Unfortunately the REM song could be very appropriate if he gets elected.

I've no doubt their exuberance to have their music associated with a tRump rally must be right up there with the Stones. (Although 'End of the World' would certainly be appropriate).

That perplexes me, too. If you're gonna play a Stones song, even in defiance of their wishes, why anyone would play THAT song is beyond me. I'd go with "Start Me Up" or "Street Fighting Man" or some such thing.
