Related: About this forumTrump said Detroit and Michigan are run at all levels by Democrats. Michigan's Gov is Republican.

(1,122 posts)Since 1978, and with the only exception the first, 1990 election of John Engler, the gubernatorial winners in Michigan have been candidates from the party opposite the incumbent U.S. president.
1978 (Jimmy Carter, Democrat): William Milliken, Republican
1982 (Ronald Reagan, Republican): James Blanchard, Democrat
1986 (Ronald Reagan, Republican): James Blanchard, Democrat
1990 (George Bush, Republican): John Engler, Republican
1994 (Bill Clinton, Democrat): John Engler, Republican
1998 (Bill Clinton, Democrat): John Engler, Republican
2002 (George W. Bush, Republican): Jennifer Grahholm, Democrat
2006 (George W. Bush, Republican): Jennifer Grahholm, Democrat
2010 (Barack Obama, Democrat): Rick Snyder, Republican
2014 (Barack Obama, Democrat): Rick Snyder, Republican
Why this pattern? Because of the midterms. Michigan (since 1978), Pennsylvania (since 1938), Wyoming (since 1958), Kansas (since 1990), and Arizona (since 1990) are just five statesand there are morewhich have almost always been electing governors from the party opposite the president. That's because the opposition party has been turning out more participation in the midterm elections.

(54 posts)That state, like Pennsylvania, is pyrite for the GOP. The unions in that state are very powerful, and will work together to defeat him. That is why no Republican Presidential candidate has won Michigan since the 1988 election, which was an election where even PA and CA voted red.
Which isn't to say that MI isn't a crucial state for Trump. With states like SC within reach of HRC, he'll need to flip some blue states to have a chance, which is pretty much a lost cause at this point.

(1,122 posts)In 2012, North Carolina was 6 points more Republican than the nation. Georgia was 12 points more Republican than the nation. Arizona was 13 points more Republican than the nation.
Meanwhile, also in 2012, Michigan was 6 points more Democratic than the nation.
If Donald Trump loses this 2016 presidential election, and North Carolina, Georgia, and Arizona are states he fails to hold, there is no opportunity for him in Michigan.
In 2012, Michigan was 12 points more Democratic than North Carolina. Michigan was 17 points more Democratic than Georgia. Michigan was 18 points more Democratic than Arizona.
If there is just one state Donald Trump fails to hold in the 2016 Republican column
he loses. More than one state
he loses decisively. All that would follow is a spin on the title of the 1997 movie, As Bad As It Gets.

(659 posts)Unfortunately is a RED state locally that somehow votes Blue for presidents.
I'm sooooo disgusted by our state house and senate and backward policies that only drives idiocy and hate.
I was glad to see Trump get interrupted every two minutes during his speech here.
