2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe events that will finish Trump off, once and for all The Debates
If there are any. Trump is already trying to get out of the debates, NFL games, Clinton Campaign set up the dates, both lies.
For a precursor on how Hillary will do, just look at how she handled the Benghazi hearings. 11 hours of a personal witch hunt.
Can you imagine Trump lasting that long. He would have had a "Trump" less than a hour in.
Gowdy just trying to embarrass and implicate her.
Can't wait for the "rumble in the jungle" with Hillary being Ali.

(2,550 posts)Nothing is gained by debating her.
He can't insult her without looking horrible.
He can't win on policy or facts.
The only thing he could do is speak louder than her but she is very pushy herself.
I don't see how Trump can win unless there's a huge gotcha moment but Hillary has had so many people digging up dirt on her for years, there won't be one.
If Trump came out very calm, collected and debated on facts in a lower voice, he might actually win a debate and get voters. I just don't see him doing it.

(58,785 posts)Even those he memorized he would have little understanding of.
Remember how he thought when he was president he could order the press to stop saying mean things about him? An 8-year-old's view that he never really advanced beyond over the next 60 years of living, in spite of attending college. His inability to be interested in anything but himself has been crippling.
Donald's dad rescued him from ruin many times. He only died in 1999, when Donald was around 53, leaving him a bunch more money to lose but otherwise on his own.

(2,550 posts)I jumped on the Hillary train around September during the Democratic first debate but before that I thought about being on the Trump train.
He was fun, new, had some socially left views...had I known he was going to keep it all up and maintain the crazy, I would've never believed it.
How on earth did they elect this man to represent the GOP?

(58,785 posts)of their betrayal by the GOP leadership and their dark money funders -- mostly. For some he's a statement, others see him as a strong leader.
But some believe in him personally. He's a new Ronald Reagan with a different style but once again providing them those warm fuzzies. Poor things. He "cares about" them.

(34,425 posts)Daddy to step in and reverse all of their bad decisions. They are like frightened children who want nothing more than to have daddy step in and make everything okay. When Drumpf blusters, "ONLY *I* CAN FIX" this or that complex problem, that's the only thing they want to hear. They're childish, dangerous, and want nothing more than to believe that Daddy Drumpf will fix everything with his Manly Manliness. It's utterly pathetic.

(52,288 posts)so far he's (unintentionally) playing the "lower expectations" game extremely well.
if his meds are working, they'll say he seems presidential just standing next to hillary the way any challenger looks presidential standing next to an incumbent.
and if he can sound remotely coherent, they'll be so impressed, most improved kid in school.
whereas hillary, of course, needs to be absolutely perfect. they'll be all over her if she says anything they can remotely spin as untrue or playing into their silly "untrustworthy" narrative.
objective viewers will of course easily see hillary as clobbering trump, but objective viewers aren't allowed to comment during the let-our-biased-experts-form-public-opinion part of the debate show.
TXIRISHWOMAN
(24 posts)He'll exceed expectations if he can manage to go an hour without insulting the moderator, threatening nuclear war, or asking Hillary to whip it out so they can compare sizes (really, most of us would have just believed he had a bigger dick than a woman, but he's bizarrely determined to prove the point for some reason).
Heck, it worked for Dubya. "Look! It talks in complete sentences! He is smarter than a goldfish!"

(10,857 posts)Currently, I do not think he'll stay in the race. But if he does, he'll play to his audience, being an interrupting, patronizing, barking baboon sergeant. And 25% to 35% of the voters will love him for it.
Worse still, if his handlers have any competence at all, they will coach Trump to deliberately lie in the debates in an attempt to use the Backfire Effect, a particularly obnoxious psychological tactic in which stupid people believe the lie even more when someone they don't like corrects it.

It doesn't work (as well) on Democrats. But it reinforces the yahoos' already warped perceptions. It's really Trump's only way to stay in it, by restoring voter enthusiasm among the... less capable among us.
I wrote some crap about it after Mitt Romney pulled that bullshit on President Obama. At the time, I said that by refusing to get pissed off about Romney's dishonesty, he sealed the election for himself. I still stand by it:

(54 posts)I remember closely watching the Benghazi hearings, and was really impressed with how Clinton handled herself. Her performance during those hearings convinced me that she would do very well against her GOP opponents in a future Presidential debate. Then again, she's been put to the test for the past 20+ years, passing with flying colors.
Trump is about to be in a world of hurt. Contrary to what he thinks, randomly tweeting BS does NOT a good debater make. I wouldn't be surprised if he loses his control, and calls Hillary the b-word on national television.
NastyRiffraff
(12,448 posts)if the debates do happen. I get that he may try to weasel out of any debates, but then again I think of his giant ego. He thinks he really CAN out-debate Hillary. Because to him, out-shout means out-debate.
It will be fun to see her slice and dice him, and throw his entrails into the toilet.

(989 posts)But i think the e-mails have been overplayed and people are sick of hearing about them since nothing new seems to come from talking about them except making the GOP look desperate.
I think the next big thing will be this 'Wrongful Death' suit Pat Smith has filed. It will be a great talking point but I do believe the suit will be thrown out...at least I am hoping it will. If a person can't win a wrongful death suit when she has video of cops shooting her son in the back, then I don't see how Pat Smith can win this suit.
