Such a strange non-election

While I vote straight-ticket Democratic every election, and always work myself into a lather with whatever phony the GOP coughs up, well, it's good for the country to have a proper fight every four years. I'm on one side of the fight, but even more I'm on the side of the match.

Obama and Romney had at each other, partly on policy, partly on character and theatrics. And the country was better for it.

Here we've got Hillary doing the hard, nitty gritty of electioneering -- raising money, registering voters, etc.

And you've got Trump, who on one level is running against her -- holding rallies, lying about Mexicans, issuing death threats, etc. -- but at another level ain't even in the ring. He's standing outside the ropes yelling at the judges, and Hillary is winning round after round by default.

They're not arguing about taxes, or trade, or foreign policy, or the right way to fix health care. There's not even an argument. There is a professional woman in this column, and there is a lunatic crapping himself in that column, and one of them will get the nuclear codes in a couple of weeks.

It's a strange thing. I kind of miss the normalcy of a regular election, with its Democratic confusion and Republican mendacity.

And I can't wait to never, ever have to think about Donald Trump again.

1. Yes, but just imagine what this ridiculous person can do to the ENTIRE party?

I am on pins and needles not just for the presidency, but all the downline elections too. It is going to be a blue tsunami.

2. I'm optimistic for the short term, but past that. . .

I'm horrified. We really do need a sane "conservative" party to go against a sane "liberal" party.

I know the GOP has been crazy for a while, but it had this shaky veneer of sanity and a couple of semi-competent people around. When even that is gone, I don't know what's left.

Hopefully they'd get their shit together, but I worry they'll go crazier and crazier -- and one day they'll win the Presidency again. . .

4. Don't expect Trump to be gone with the election.

He'll probably try to use it to set up some kind of conservative TV network or something. Now that he's got this many people to listen to him, I doubt he'll ever shut up.
