UAW president: Hillary Clinton promises to rewrite NAFTA

PHILADELPHIA — UAW President Dennis Williams reiterated Tuesday that presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has promised him that she will try to rewrite the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to better protect workers.

Speaking to reporters on the morning before Tuesday night’s roll call at the Democratic National Convention formally nominating Clinton for president, Williams said the former secretary of state “recognizes that it needs to be renegotiated.” The UAW has already endorsed Clinton.

The position tracks with Clinton’s longstanding stance that NAFTA needs work in light of widespread concerns, especially in Rust Belt states like Michigan, that the agreement hasn’t protected or created enough new manufacturing jobs.

“She has committed to me that not only would she dig into NAFTA but she made every indication that she would sit down and try to redo NAFTA,” Williams told reporters. “She recognizes that NAFTA was not the success it was supposed to be.”...
