Business Insider:Desperate to settle on one conservative alternative, Religious Right leaders backing Rick Santorum and those backing Newt Gingrich are now resorting to vicious attacks against what have long been seen as off-limits targets in presidential campaigns the candidates' wives.
Influential evangelical leader James Dobson set off the fireworks at this weekend's Christian Right summit, giving a speech that lavished praise on Karen Santorum and asked whether Americans really wanted Callista Gingrich "a woman who was a man's mistress for eight years" as their First Lady, according to sources who attended the meeting.
...snip...
Needless to say, the Texas summit did little to unite the Christian Right. On Sunday, the day following the conference, reports began circulating about Karen Santorum's six-year love affair with a Pittsburgh obsetrician and abortion provider 40 years her senior. (The Santorum campaign has yet to comment on the story.)

(21,043 posts)Or do evangelicals think that part is just dandy, and it's just the woman that's guilty?
The only good thing I've heard about evangelicals lately is that their funds are drying up. People are not as willing to support these a-holes in grand style any longer.

(11,175 posts)He cheated on his first wife with a mistress who became his second wife, then he cheated on her with a mistress who became his third (and current wife). That's not even counting the unknown number of mistresses he had whom he never married.
I'm sure a lot of evangelicals think all this is much less than dandy, but it's still better than having a president who's -- you know -- food stamps and all that.

Well, that and the fact that they've told their flocks for so long that ANY Democrat is basically the anti-christ.

(11,175 posts)So Newt would tell you, and he'd be backed up by plenty of white South Carolina Republicans, most of whom have black friends and don't have a racist bone in their bodies.
We need a "dog whistle" smilie.

(15,391 posts)Newt went on Dobson's radio show (was it with Dobson himself or some other interviewer?) and tried to do the whole I did wrong, but God has forgiven me schtick that normally evangelicals love. Either Jimmy didn't buy it, or Newt did something to piss him off.

(20,730 posts)Their sludge buckets are all but empty.
Personally, I have no problem with the "First Lady" being a lying, conniving mistress, as long as her husband is a good president.
But of course, there's no chance of Newt becoming that.
