Related: About this forumA Remarkable Work of Staggering Dishonesty - Mitt Romney's latest speech
As Greg Sargent, Steve Benen, and others have amply demonstrated, Mitt Romney has a problem with the truth. Throughout his campaign, he has openly lied about his previous positions, his beliefs, and the records of his opponents, Republican or otherwise. In a speech today on economic freedom at the University of Chicago, Romney continued the trend, building a mostly substanceless case against President Obama on the basis of half-truths and falsehoods. You can read the whole speech if youd like. For now, Id like to highlight a few passages that sum up Romneys case against Obama in fact-free aplomb. First, theres this:
For three years, President Obama has expanded government instead of empowering the American people. Hes put us deeper in debt. Hes slowed the recovery and harmed our economy.
There are a few things missing from this account. First is the fact that the Great Recession began in 2008 and was already on its way to reach its nadir by the time Obama took office. By the time the stimulus began to take effect, the economy was well on its way to the bottom, and independent analyses agree that the administrations policies kept the country out of a depression, even if it wasnt enough to juice the recovery.

Proud Liberal Dem
(24,436 posts)They tanked the economy hard in 2008, (probably) knew that they wouldn't get another term in office, so they figured that they'd have to put up with a Democrat in the WH for 4 years while he/she took all of the blame and suffered all of the hardship for the rotten economy he/she was stuck with. Now that the economy is recovering, they're trying to come in and take control of the economy back over so that they can wreck it all over again by removing more regulation, implementing more tax cuts, increasing defense spending, and, most importantly, implementing the kind of severe austerity measures to crush social programs they've only ever dreamed of. They've also managed to bottle up a lot of President Obama's agenda with severe abuse of procedural tactics so that he couldn't get everything that he wanted- though some of his un-enacted policies could very well have improved the recovery. Anytime Republicans opine that President Obama didn't do more to improve the economic recovery, we need to ask, "Him and what Congress?"

(4,310 posts)on CNN one has to wonder, what the hell Romney is talking about.
He states the recession was deeper than it needed to be due to Obama's
policies. Voters paying only the most scant attention to politics in the
last few years know Obama has been swimming in shark infested waters
with Congress sabotaging him at every turn. At a time when people have made
the greatest sacrifices of their lives Congress has acted with one all consuming
goal, make Obama a one term president. With congresses approval numbers
at an all time low and Obama's at a comfortable level doesn't appear that
plan has worked very well.
Romney is pathetic. I honestly believe if he was told in order to win he needed
to put a bag over his head and quack like a chicken he would be right there on
CNN flapping his arms.
