...quarantine if the passengers had typhus. That made good sense from a public health policy standpoint. One of my ancestresses came over on a "coffin ship"; she and her sister were the only survivors in the family. They made it to Canada, then lied their way into the US.

Health laws were enforced at Ellis Island. You had to be examined by a doctor, and some people were sent back. Again, I understand the public health concerns.

Most of my sympathy goes to desperate people trying to get away from hellish conditions in their homeland.
