There's a simple reason that the cable news networks want to play up the drama and the non-existent horserace: nobody is watching.

College football kicked off this weekend. The NFL starts Thursday. MLB pennant races are heating up. The US Open is in full swing. NASCAR is on every day. Sports alone provide a total distraction from political news.
Not to mention that school is back in session (Friday night lights). Unless you're a political junkie, you're only half listening at best.
