most are simply not equipped to ask questions. They heard the repub Comey's initial press conference - filled with talking points designed to be useful in the campaign against her - and never bothered to follow up. They don't seem to realize that the story was drastically different when Comey was testifying under oath in front of Congress, and in subsequent disclosures.
