Praise for Putin Is Likely to Backfire with Republicans

Donald Trump and a few of his acolytes are giving fond praise to Vladimir Putin. They're taking a chance, and not a very good one. The Republican Party, especially the right wing of that party, is deeply allergic to all things Russian. That's been true since the 1950's and the Soviet Era. Memories run deep among reactionaries, and Putin, with his KGB background is suspect among that group.

What is Herr Drumpf thinking when he praises Putin as better than a U.S. President? Yes, the GOOPers hate Obama, but that doesn't mean that they're full of praise for that Russian, Putin. By praising him, Trump is not helping himself much with many on the right. So, what are they to do?

Well, one of the things they might do is stay home from the polls in November. That would be a good thing for our own candidate. Trump's not going to generate enthusiasm with the right wing of the party by displaying his affection for the Russian leader. Not a chance. It's a risky, risky thing for him to do. He's already not hugely popular with traditional Republicans.

It's all good, and I hope he continues to kiss Putin's ass. That will put a smile on Hillary's face every time.

They're not going to pay it attention, and to be blunt many of them crave Putin-style authoritarian ethnonationalism, complete with the crackdowns on liberals and the LGBTQ communities.

the ugly underbelly of authoritarianism is that there many submissives out there crying out to say, "Thank you sir, can I have another?"

Yeah, I was alive then and recall very well the bomb drills in school. Difference is, I stayed in school.
