2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumTrump has reliable tells for when he's lying.
He tacks phrases like, "believe me," "trust me," "I don't know," "honestly" and other hedges onto sentences he says. Actually, since he adds those tells almost all the time, he's basically lying every time he opens his mouth. But, any time he uses words like that, what came before the tell is a blatant lie. Every freaking time.
Trump tells on himself.

(58,785 posts)"Believe me" may be a clue to whether he knows he's going to lie deliberately, but a lot of the time he mostly sort of believes what he says as he says it.
A major characteristic of his type of disorder is constant contradiction of oneself as whatever seems good to say changes with the moment or the butterfly flit of a typically very short attention span.

(16,104 posts)The point is that if you are a little different, or a little outrageous, or if you do things that are bold or controversial, the press is going to write about you. ― Donald J. Trump, Trump: The Art of the Deal

(47,516 posts)The problem for Trump is that he has to not only maintain the outrageous behavior, but he has to compete with his previous behavior if he is going to get the press's attention. Eventually, he goes from being an eccentric character, to being a ridiculous clown.

he has said that if there was anything damaging to him, he would't release it. He's also said that Putin's invasion of the Crimea was wrong; but he got away with it, so it's okay. So he's a self-confessed ass-coverer and scofflaw. The first clearly explains why he hasn't, and won't, release his tax returns and why we can't believe the release of his health record to "Dr.", actually Mr., Oz. The second tells us plainly what kind of president he'd be. He'd make Nixon look like a paragon of virtue. These are only two examples of his telling the truth about himself, and even if they were inadvertent, listening to him does reveal his view the truth--from his own mouth.

And whatever he is accusing Hillary of, it's very likely that he's guilty of it, or thinking he will be accused of it soon.

(22,037 posts)Donald Trump's lying is so blatantly transparent that I don't understand the people supporting him. I know they hate Hillary Clinton because she's done all the things-- and more-- that she and her husband have been accused of. (snark) Of course, the inept Republicans have never even been able to indict her let alone convict and "lock her up." Yet there are people who think he's great.
Nearly everything Mr. Trump says is either demonstrably false or it's a reversal of a position he's stated. You can instantly sense that he's scamming or lying to you. You point out, MineralMan, that his use of certain code words are his "tells." Another poster pointed out that his hand gestures are also "tells." As a New Yorker, I've seen his behavior since the 1970's and I've never understood how anyone takes this buffoon seriously and that includes banks, contractors and the general public. He's not even charming which is a tool many con artists will use for their scam. He's coarse, crude and rude. Why would anyone with a brain and a modicum of common sense listen to this idiot? Why would anyone want to do business with him?
I hope he loses the election, loses the Trump University lawsuits, and has damaged his business brand to the point that he'll lose much of it and any credibility he has left and just disappear. That probably won't happen so I'll be satisfied if he loses to Hillary Clinton.

(146,317 posts)That's why the Republican Party exists in the first place. That's why this nation is pretty evenly divided, politically. People who cannot tell who is lying and who can't use critical thinking also vote. It's one of the difficulties of maintaining a democratic republic.
The leadership of the Republican Party is made up of cynical people who know that they can take advantage of others to gain power. This is why we must work hard to stay on a progressive path. There are those who would like us not to do that. We must stay vigilant and work to get out the vote of progressives.
It is that simple. Donald Trump is one of the least skilled politicians to run for President, ever. His transparency should be enough reason for him to lose, but he is appealing strongly to the uninformed, unintelligent and uneducated. He's dangerous. We must stand together against his brand of selfish greed.

(877 posts)That's the same tell my boss has. My boss is a theater major that ended up in an economic field (don't ask) and I can always tell when he speaks about something he has no knowledge about and is just repeating what was told - he over-enunciates and speaks very slowly. Same thing with Donnie - think about when he was talking about the L-G-B-T-Q -- sounded like reading an eye chart.
Lots of tells. The issue is -- will people listen?? I think not. . .

(23,251 posts)..should be, "If he says 'Believe me,' DON'T believe him!"
That will not only set the audience up for looking for falsehoods, it will force Little Donny to be conscious of his tendency to say those telling phrases; and once he starts thinking about those, he will get rattled a lot more easily and blow his lines.
I think it's a GREAT way to set him up!
And if I was Hillary Clinton, just before that first debate, I would turn Elizabeth Warren loose on the most vicious Twitter tear Little Donny has ever seen. Let her burn him to the ground and get him hot under the collar, right before the debate. Then watch his composure fall apart. He can't help himself.

(4,168 posts)To say that Trump is lying implies that he knows what the truth is and then consciously, deliberately tells a mistruth.
The situation is far worse than that. As a narcissist, Trump is oblivious to the truth because it's irrelevant to his self-interest. Whether or not something is true just doesn't matter to him one way or another. All that matters is that his version of reality makes him the center of attention and better than anyone else.
If Trump were a deliberate liar, like his rival Ted Cruz, I wouldn't be as worried about his presidency (relatively speaking). At least a liar has a firm grasp on reality; Donald Trump does not.

(15,540 posts)I've known a couple of narcissists intimately and it's infuriating how they lie and truly believe their lies. It comes naturally to people with NPD. Also, because they lack empathy they don't care if their lies harm others. The only person they truly care about is themselves.

Meghan Trainor's "Your lips are Moving" some of the words...
If your lips are moving, if your lips are moving
If your lips are moving, then you're lyin', lyin', lyin', baby
If your lips are moving, if your lips are moving
If your lips are moving, then you're lyin', lyin', lyin', baby
