2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHRC will hold rally aimed at Millennials in Philadelphia on Monday
On Monday, September 19, Hillary Clinton will campaign in Philadelphia, where she will deliver a speech laying out the stakes of Novembers election for millennial voters in Pennsylvania and across the country, the campaign stated. Clinton will discuss the challenges facing young people today and how her agenda would support them, including her plans to make free community college and debt-free college available to all Americans.
The description suggests that Clinton is likely to hold the event on a college campus. This news comes on the heels of the latest Quinnipiac Poll showing 44% of 18 to 34 year-olds nationwide support Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson or Green Party nominee Jill Stein.
The campaign also launched Millennials for Hillary today.

No details as yet as to where it is being held which is a shame as they should be trying to get as big a turnout as possible.

(146,317 posts)take the time to talk with them about the consequences of this election. Don't argue with them, but point out what the world would look like for them with Trump as President. Just give them something to think about, and trust that they'll vote for the better outcome. Most will, in fact, do that.

(417 posts)Obama courted us early on, where Hillary seems to benefit from just not being Trump, which I think has led her to take us for granted.
For the average millennial who doesn't consume politics on a daily basis Johnson and Stein seem like viable options.
I've lonnnnng argued Hillary could catch up with Johnson with millennials if she just embraced his stance on legalization.

So even though Johnson who is pro fracking, pro Keystone, and pro fucking Citizens United it's down to the WEED?
So effing what he supports marijuana - he will never be elected. Meanwhile Trump is looking very closely at Colorado where I live and if Christie is AG - watch out.
Weed will be everywhere eventually if Democrats are elected.

The so-called most tolerant, most education generation is ready to throw POC, LGBT, grandparents, disabled and more under the bus out of spite.

(417 posts)But it is Johnson's best selling point with young voters. There are more in favor of legalization than against it, and coming out in favor would help her chances with millennials without taking away from her base.

(24,135 posts)I'm imagining right now the snarky mean Tweets that would ensue.
Again, Johnson supports Citizens United / Keystone - everything they're supposed to hate - but their hate for Hillary wins every time for some of these folks. He'll never win but we could have another Florida somewhere - Trump will scream rigged, stolen.
Ack!
I live in Colorado - so trust me I know about the Millennials - they are everywhere. The dispensaries were breeding grounds for Hillary hate - Although my bud tender swore back in April he'd never vote for Hillary - now will.
My Millennial son flipped to Hillary and his friends now treat him like he's a traitor on Facebook. He recently worked a couple music festivals in CO & OH where angry Sanders supporters would walk right up to him and say something snarky, rude, nasty.
We gathered signatures - that's how you get weed legalized.

(13,616 posts)the GOP wants you to belive that the former sanders supporters do not see Johnson for what he is. I think you will be surprised to see many of them add in getting Hillary that one half inch over the line.

(80,708 posts)It's not only the right thing to do, it's the politically astute thing to do.
So what's the fucking hold up? Why are we ceding legalization votes to Gary Johnson?

(129,084 posts)Obama had to overcome a bunch of fucking racists who took one look at his skin color and walked away - and that included some Democrats. He needed every vote he could get and traditionally, candidates reach out to the newly-eligible. He is my age and our "young boomer" generation always found ourselves as a "transition" group - having been exposed to both the "old" and the "new" (including technology), so we had to "talk to" both.
My millennial nieces and nephews (and there are many) are no more looking at any nuts like Johnson or Stein than electing the man in the moon. And they are certainly concerned about more issues than MJ.
As a note, Chelsea is right on the millennial cusp.

(129,084 posts)I was thinking somewhere by Penn & Drexel since the 2 are close to each other.
But then I expect Temple has the larger college population (38,000 (pdf)) and would be easy for them to get to.
That is my mother's alma mater!

(129,084 posts)and even after she passed away, they were still sending mailers. She wasn't a photo person and would probably have been livid if there was anything "online" about her. There weren't that many black students at Temple (this was before Brown vs Board and most of the black students in this area were directed to Cheney, now a university ).
We used to go on trips via their "Temple Abroad" alumni group tours. That became my first trip to London (in 1970 - just after the Beatles broke up ).

(129,084 posts)about the stoles - either mink or fox. My mom would say they "ragged" back then! I know there were some beautiful dresses during the period although most if not all were made in the U.S. AND as she used to say, they weren't wearing a different outfit every day. They would get some nice white blouses and a couple skirts and would rotate them - maybe add a blazer one day or a scarf the next.

I was thinking that holding it near Drexel & Penn could capture a good-sized college population (just over 50,000 total) as well as being among a good-sized Caribbean community.

(80,708 posts)The fact of the matter is, even if no other state changes their laws in November, CA is probably going to legalize, which is going to make the entire West Coast of the US legal for adult recreational use. That's 50 Million Americans.
The conflict btw. Federal and State law - not just over recreational, but also medical marijuana- is untenable and will need to be resolved. Cannabis businesses need access to banking services. The DEA needs to stand down and stop filling our prisons with pot smokers, etc.
Changing scheduling from I to II is a step in the right direction, however, it will not do anything to reconcile the conflict I speak of. Cannabis needs to be fully descheduled and removed from the CSA, so at the very least states can set their own policies and know that they are not subject to the changing whims of whoever happens to be Attorney General.
And Millennials overwhelmingly support legalization. In fact, a majority of Americans do.
Unfortunately, policy is decided on the East Coast, where the issue still seems to be too often regarded warily as something of an odd joke.

(3,635 posts)It's really sad that millennials aren't excited about the prospect of being a part of history, the election of the first female president in a nation that has existed for 240 years.
And Hillary is one of the most qualified, honest, hard working candidates to ever run for office, with a pragmatic progressive agenda to move the country forward, building on the work Obama did.
Many millennials simply don't realize the extent to which they've been programmed with anti-Clinton and anti-Hillary propaganda (from the media, the right and now even the left), much of which is misogynist and is designed to play into their (unexamined) stereotypes about women.
The choices in this election are clear, this is a moment of reckoning, and those who claim otherwise are merely enabling the election of a neo-nazi/teabagger administration, who will bring untold suffering to this world, especially those who are most vulnerable, and determine the makeup of SCOTUS for a generation.

(28,876 posts)I just really don't see her wooing millennials to turn out for her. They have no love for establishment politicians.
Leave the mobilizing to Trump. He generates excitement in them (thankfully, excitement against him).
