From January 26, 2009 to January 3, 2011, seventeen women served concurrently in the Senate for the first time.

Kelly Ayote (R-NH) is currently serving in the U.S. Senate, but not in the photo.
Snowe (R-ME) and Hutchison (R-TX) did not run this year due to retirement, they are both in the photo but will not be in the new 113th Congress next year.



Women joining the U.S. Senate in the new 113th Congress that have won seats in the 2012 election are:

Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin)
Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii)
Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts).
Heidi Heitkamp (D-North Dakota)
Deb Fischer (R-Nebraska)


So, in January 2013, the number of serving women senators will increase to 20.
Women will now hold 20 of the 100 seats of The Senate, a historic number that is still only 20% of the seats.
Considering women comprise more than 50% of the U.S. population - our work is not yet done.

We have 30 more seats to win!

4. Rumor has it that Ashley Judd ‘might’ throw her hat into the ring against Mitch McConnell (R-KY)

Ms. Judd was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky on May 9, 2009. She subsequently earned a Mid-Career Master in Public Administration degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 2010.

7. why does the 1992 pic look like it's from the 1960's

was fashion that bad back then? Not a comment on the women I'm sure men were dressed just as bad. I just don't remember 1992 that well maybe I should look at some pictures of how I was dressed back then. Could be that it's in black and white. Still awful

8. Oh, yeah. Very bad period for womens' clothing

Especially what are called "career" clothing. But other things as well. I remember shopping for a dress at the time. I must have had to go to something that called for one. At my job at the time, slacks and a nice top were all we had to do, so dress shopping wasn't a thing I normally did. I recall asking a salesperson if there wasn't something that didn't look like Lucy and Ethel. There wasn't much.
