2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIs this the end of the Murdoch/Fox - Republican Alliance?
Think about it. Fox News was launched in October 1996. Since then, it probably bears more responsibility for the major failures of the Republican Party than any other single entity. - the Clinton impeachment fiasco, the failure to prevent 9-11, Bush II, Perpetual War, Torture as a strategy, Economic meltdown, congressional party of obstruction, the Tea Party (a Fox astroturf caper), the 2012 Republican Presidential primary clown show, becoming an old white guy party with diminishing national electoral prospects.
Murdoch himself has presided over all of this and the hacking scandal in the UK. How can the Republican Party survive if they continue to take marching orders from this megalomaniac?

(6,440 posts)Feel free to take this with a pinch of salt, but it sounds quite plausible to me. The word on the street is that Murdoch actually wanted to support Obama in 2008, but was talked out of it by his sons. This didn't represent any great ideological conversion on Rupe's part, it's just that he saw which way the wind was blowing and wanted to back a winner while claiming credit for his success, as he had already done with Tony Blair. That's why he was so frantic in his support for David Cameron in the subsequent UK election. Had Cameron lost out to Nick Clegg, which actually seemed a possibility at one point, Murdoch's reputation as a kingmaker would have been in tatters.
