Latter-day Saints Church removes ‘chastity and virtue’ passage from Mormon girls’ religious study

New York Daily News

A Book of Mormon passage slammed as implying a raped woman has lost her “chastity and virtue” has been removed from a religious study guide for girls.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Monday confirmed that officials eliminated Moroni 9.9 from Mormon girls’ required “Personal Progress” workbooks, The Salt Lake Tribune reported. Feminists within the LDS Church had been criticizing the passage’s inclusion for years.

LDS spokesman Eric Hawkins told the Tribune the scripture no longer appears in English editions of the guide and will soon be taken out of versions the guide in other languages as well.

Hawkins said the change squares with recent LDS Church guidance on sexual purity in youths that stated, “victims of sexual abuse are not guilty of sin and do not need to repent.”
