He's still not conservative according to the "anybody but Trump crowd", and going to a couple of black churches for a quick photo-op don't make you a Christian.

Catholic actually. I think my source for this was the catholic schools I went to, but can't really say.
Only recently have I heard the stories that Hitler was supposedly an atheist.

So I googled. One column I have come to trust is The Straight Dope. Their conclusion - there was probably plenty of Hitler quotes to support either position. At a minimum Hitler surely manipulated Christians.

Not a shot at you. Your post simply spurred me to look this up and try to find some authoritative discussion on it.

a newspaper website.

http://www.dfw.com/2016/09/28/1141523/the-latest-clinton-camp-says-trump.html

The Republican presidential nominee asked those attending a Wednesday afternoon rally in Council Bluffs to raise their hands "if you're not a Christian conservative."

He noticed "a couple people" raising their hands.

He asked the crowd, "Should we keep them in the room?" He answered himself, "Yes, I think so."

I am hoping we have video.

coaxing his supporters to congratulate themselves for being "conservative Christians," and invoking a kind of mob psychology, playing to the majority against the exception.

I distrust that kind of manipulation. "Should we let 'em stay? Yeah, we should let 'em stay." If there is no reason for them not to stay, what was gained in calling them out in the first place?

Citizens have the freedom of choice of a religious tradition if they want one, as well as the choice to disassociate from any religious tradition entirely. There's a complex spectrum involved in that array of choices.

Trump is too authoritarian to allow for any spectrum. He asked for a show of hands on what he thinks is a binary issue.

organizations to ask the daughters of the "conservative Christians" in Trump's audience what they think of their parents' support for a man who calls women "pigs."

I would think in Iowa that question would have special resonance, as it is a leading producer of pork, and there is a very significant percentage of voters who identify as fundamentalist Christians of various stripes:

"Your parents are here at this rally. Evidently they intend to support Mr. Trump in November. In the past Mr. Trump has called women misogynist names, berating them with words like 'pigs' and 'dogs,' etc. Does this not make you uncomfortable? If you decide to marry and have kids, would you permit your sons to call women derogatory names?"

among his supporters many evangelical Christians, who are supposed to have read the texts on which their faith is based.

Either they haven't read them very carefully, or read them and didn't understand them. Trump's message alone should suggest to them a contradiction in their personal beliefs.

The evangelical community has been shamefully hypocritical in its support for Donald Trump. The people who distrust fundamentalist Christian collusion with right wing politicians have yet another election cycle as justification for that distrust.
