Rick Klein: Among the ways Donald Trump is breaking with conventional politics? Hes not even really pretending that he won the debate. He is insisting that he won, of course but hes also complaining about the moderator, the questions, and even the microphone he used at Hofstra. (As his opponent pointed out, winners dont complain about the equipment.) And in the debates aftermath, he is also adding fuel to a two-decade-old feud with a former Miss Universe whom he attacked for gaining weight. This is the Trump that the Trump campaign had been trying to disappear and the Trump that Hillary Clintons campaign insists is the only true Trump to exist.
Thats whats behind Clintons masterful strategy from Monday night: She set traps for Trump to fall into or, rather, she pressed a whole bunch of buttons knowing that something would set him off. Clinton got the result she wanted. Trumps reaction, meanwhile, took would could have been a partial victory or a split decision and turned it into a solid loss. The Clinton camp got a debate win, and then a parting gift.
First Read: Trumps ill-advised feud with Machado fits into a pattern weve noticed throughout the campaign: When Trump is in a bad period like this, he makes it worse for himself by refusing to back down. Particularly in the face of poor reviews (remember the Khan fight after his convention message was panned by pundits?), Trump has a tendency to spiral downward for a few days until hes convinced to stop lashing out or punching down. Our question is: how long does bad stretch for Trump last?

(50,986 posts)the present and to have been correct at all times in the past.
It must be difficult for his campaign advisors to approach him about the complexity of variables comprising the electorate, because Trump is right and therefore anything they might propose to him -- especially if nuanced considerations are required -- is a pointless annoyance.
And also because most of his advisors and surrogates are morally compromised and/or lying hacks.
Doesn't seem to be a particularly effective profile for a winning political campaign.

At some point even folks at the National Review and Weekly Standard have to conclude that Trump absolutely does not have the temperament (let alone the skill set) to be president.
If he has not learned to this point, will he ever?

(15,682 posts)Looks like Hillary enjoyed the debate. And boy was she up to no good. She looks downright devious in that pic. I had no idea she had it in her. Makes me very happy!

(30,058 posts)Trump would be out every day complaining, part of being president is hearing remarks made against them, President Obama has had more than anyone should ever have to contend but Trump does not have the stamina to be president.
