Three State Senate Candidates Have Come to my Door...
I live in St. Paul, MN, and am the DFL chair of my precinct organization and a delegate to the State Senate District Convention that takes place on March 31. The current State Senator from our district is a nice guy and a good Democrat, but I disagree with him on a couple of issues, including his support for the Vikings stadium, which will be partially paid for with state dollars. It's almost certain that the incumbent will get the DFL endorsement at the convention.
What's remarkable is that all three people vying for the DFL endorsement have shown up at my door. That has never happened before, and I've been a delegate to the Senate District convention every time since I've lived here. I've had good, long conversations with each of them, and haven't decided yet who to support. I'm still studying their positions on several issues and looking at the voting record of the incumbent more closely.
I write this because it demonstrates that the 2012 election isn't going to just be an election based on apathetic voters. These candidates, among others, are already walking the neighborhoods and door-knocking. I'm very glad to see that, and hope the Convention and the primary that follows it are sharply contested. It will bring out the DFL voters and raise the excitement for the November election.
It's all very good news, I think!
