2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumOk, that's it. The Abortion debate is obviously what righties are talking about right now
because my righties keep bringing it up, and then I've seen a few threads here on it. Hang on while I vent (fuck these motherfuckers, fuck these motherfuckers, fuck these motherfuckers, fuck these motherfuckers) Ok, that helped...
I really boils down to one thing: controlling women. That's it. Really.
This is settled law AND HAS BEEN FOR OVER FORTY YEARS and these motherfuckers act like it's still up in the air.
And I just *LOVE* how these motherfuckers think they can play judge and jury on it too...like if the woman wasn't raped or an incest victim, she should be forced into incubation. (aside: please use the term 'forced incubation')
A zygote is not a child anymore than an acorn is an oak tree, so do NOT let them say it's a baby, or it's a child. It's not, and the truth matters. It's a zygote and then it's a fetus. Don't let those motherfuckers frame it.
They will try to say "beating heart" and you say, "breathing on its own" because fuck them. Bring up the mother's beating heart too
For the Bible thumpers, Exodus 21:22 <<<---- tell THEM to look it up. The remind them that the US Constitution is behind every woman and not only do they NOT get to judge that woman, they don't even get to KNOW about it, because strange women's vaginas are none of their fucking business. Oh, but for our purposes, here it is in every version: http://biblehub.com/exodus/21-22.htm
We have been having this debate on THEIR terms for far too long, and it's high time we fucking stop it: If women are equal to men, then we have by RIGHT autonomy over our bodies. We are either equal citizen capable of making our choices, or we're not. And it's long past fucking time we demand that these motherfuckers stop it with the lascivious details of the conception so that they can dole out spite in spades. Fuck that. And fuck them.
We lose each and every time we let them say "child" and not "zygote". We lose every time we let them get away with, "Oh, I am for it in the cases of rape and incest, but..." <<<<<------no buts, you're pro choice then, period, because none of the rest of it is any of your business anyway.
We have to stop them from imposing their opinion on our RIGHTS. My right to my autonomy is not reliant upon anyone else's approval or purview. My right to private decisions are not 'granted' or 'denied' by someone else's fucking religion.
Oh these motherfuckers right here. Sorry to go on and on, but this is their next attack so we might as well have at it.

(6,457 posts)We need that kind of action here. If the GOP succeeds in banning abortion they would be emboldened to go on to cutting some other rights, Social Security, Medicare ETC. It would be endless.

(15,224 posts)All true.
I just want to add that these motherfuckers cannot and will not accept facts. Like the completely undeniable truth that there are fewer abortions when a Democrat is in the White House. It's called access to birth control.
Just because these idiots are loud does not mean there are that many of them. They scream to get attention and to bully and sound like they are great in numbers.
The rest of us are tasked with remaining sane and trying to go about our daily lives without letting this kind of insanity affect us.
Vote, people. Vote! If for no other reason, the Supreme Court picks. Please VOTE!

(15,224 posts)I often wonder how women who vote for Republicans cannot see that they are voting against their own self-interests. But then, if you have a five minute conversation with one of them - even an educated, business savvy one, you will understand.
For example, I was in a discussion with a woman recently in a business setting and we were discussing the behavior of a gentleman at a business meeting. I felt he was acting unprofessionally because he was rude and condescending. The fact that he was a male hadn't entered into my thoughts even - he was an attendee at a meeting who was behaving badly. However, this woman defended him saying "boys will boys". I disagreed and she was shocked that I didn't understand her point of view.
With that kind of attitude still lingering around in 2016, it's no wonder that some women are perfectly happy to leave their life/decisions/destiny to a man to control. So those women are happy voting their rights away.
The rest of us are not so happy to give up our independence, and thankfully, there are men out there who do not ask that of us.

(108,994 posts)It boils down to the fact that abortions go up with Republican administrations and down with Democratic administrations -- because Rethugs cut the services families need.

Abortions rose steadily during the tenure of the first "pro-life" Republican President, Ronald Reagan. They reached their highest level under President H. W. Bush. Abortions then dropped dramatically under President Clinton, falling to 60% of the high under his pro-life Republican predecessor. That downward trend stalled during most of President W. Bush's tenure, and remained basically flat until the final two years of his term when Democrats retook Congress. And then abortions plunged again under Obama, falling to their lowest point in 40 years.
Compelling data for sure, but Presidents often have to deal with Congress and the Supreme Court
which is why President George W. Bush's tenure is so informative. Under Bush, Republicans controlled the House and Senate, and 2/3 of the Supreme Court. Bush had sky-high public approval following 9-11, and he and Congressional Republicans owed their 2004 re-election to the overwhelming support from church-going evangelicals and Catholics. And what did Republicans do to overturn Roe or in any meaningful way limit abortion? Nothing.
It's no coincidence that abortions go up when Republicans are in charge and down when Democrats are. The two biggest indicators a woman will have an abortion are that she is poor (75% of women who have abortions make less than $23,000 and half make less than $11,000), and had an unintended pregnancy (half of U.S. pregnancies are unintended, and 43% end in abortion).
Want to guess which political party is more effective at reducing poverty and unwanted pregnancies? I'll give you a hint. It's not the "pro-life" Party that in this last Congressional session alone fought to cut medical care for poor mothers and children, food programs for kids, and contraception coverage and access for women.

(6,699 posts)I'm against abortions, but I'm FOR a woman's right to make those decisions over her own body. The "right to birthes" tell me I can't be for both. Just fuck them! I can and AM.
I copied your post to copy and forward when the next jack ass tries to pull that shit on me again. We do need to discuss this on rationale ground, not by their terms.
