2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIs it possible for Trump to Resign?
I really don't know the answer to this question.
Can Pence step in with 31 days left before election?
Before we get all excited about Trump's
Should we be getting prepared for a bait and swap.
Asking a serious question, the GOP can never be trusted!!
Like Rachel Maddow says" Can someone talk me down on this one?"

(8,013 posts)he never did anything wrong in his mind. He thought he won the last debate. He thinks he's winning because he has big rallies and supporters who chant "Lock her up!" I don't think he'd resign for anything. He wants to remodel the White House.

I think the RNC can name a new candidate even this late (presumably Pence) but at this point most of the state ballots are locked down. It would all be moot because Hillary would win by a landslide if Trump were to leave the ticket.

(8,013 posts)A lot of their base loves Trump. Either way, they lose.

(68,868 posts)He can see "I promise to resign upon being inaugurated" but he can't resign from the ballot.

(520 posts)It would be too late to get his name roved from that ballot.
Great Point!!!

(24,689 posts)I wasnt sure about that. Thanks!

(520 posts)But I just think the GOP will try to pull a fast one!
You know their motto: "Never let a law stand in the way of a winning strategy."

(7,581 posts)No Pence this time.

(10,916 posts)How do you swap out a candidate for an election that is already in progress?
AmericanMan1958
(520 posts)They are call for him to step aside for Pence.
The reason I was asking this question.
Started to worry, some!

(10,916 posts)The only person who can pull the plug on this is Trump himself, and I doubt he would do it. He still thinks he won the first debate.
Even if he does resign, imagine the can of worms that would erupt.
People who voted for him early could claim their votes were stolen, and they could bring legal action. Each state would have different candidate replacement laws, so that would be another legal nightmare. His remaining supporters could withhold their votes, causing downballot mayhem for GOP candidates. The GOP candidate who took his place could be seen as a political opportunist, which might be career-ending.

Your explanation has helped greatly.

(32,077 posts)What if a candidate were to die? Do you think the other side automatically wins? No they don't. If a candidate died (or quit) the party national committee is authorized to appoint a new candidate no matter what the ballot status is.

(341 posts)He can't resign since he doesn't have the job. He can withdraw. But his name would still appear on the ballot in most states as the filing deadlines have past.
And really though? After calling Mexicans rapists, labeling blacks as lazy drug addicts, and all naming all Muslims as enemies of the state, you think he is going to withdraw his candidacy because he said this about women? No chance
That would seem a minor statement in his mind.
Guess his rudeness is stating to get me numb.
Hope we can recover from all this crap.

(101,361 posts)since it's legally the electoral college that normal voters choose. That would, I think, sink the Republican vote, though. Enough people would be thinking "we can't trust them to go through with that". Who knows what each Republican in the electoral college would actually do, too. Some of them may be crazies who'd think they'd have license to do whatever they felt like.

(520 posts)Plus, with control of the supreme court be on the line.
I never take my eye off a snake, it is the most dangerous when you assume it is dying.

(17,408 posts)The window of opportunity for him to quit without inflicting catastrophic damage to the ticket and downticket races, passed approximately Labor Day. For starters, his name is on all the ballots, and it's too late to print new ones.
I could see Rump bowing out, citing health reasons. In that case the GOP would convene an emergency "mini-convention" (someone here mentioned something like 168 VIPs), and pick a new nominee. Which may or may not be Pence. But whoever runs at that point won't have their name on the ballot.
