2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhat path is availibe to the Republican Party if Trump should Resign?
Not that he will ..that's not my question.
Just knowing the Repubs called for a closed door meeting tonight, & tomorrow Ryan will appear with Pence instead of Trump.
Suppose Trump just announces he's resigning.
CYA- Bye & he's gone.
What would the Repubs do in such a scenario?
Early voting has already begun. Ballots are printed. What can they realistically and legally do?
They have to make a decision...???
Just curious since I do not know what they are allowed, in a case like that.
Thanks

Looks like things took a wrong turn somewhere.

(9,148 posts)..the election and Ryan now steps in as proxy candidate till its over. We never see nor hear from Trump. We get Ryan/Pence till Nov 8th.
Sooo... Ryan rides in on his white horse & saves the Repub Party.
I can actually see this happening. They will campaign for the Repub Senators & Reps for the duration..
Well that's one possibility
oberliner
(58,724 posts)But I think he will do the opposite of what you are suggesting here.
I predict he still runs full bore as he has been.

(17,865 posts)and you don't actually directly vote for the candidate. It can be a real mess. The Democrats did sub out Torricelli this late in a Senate race.

(6,555 posts)The Constitution doesn't recognize political parties, but individuals. Trump is on the ballot and he is who people are voting for. Anything else will end up in the Supreme Court, to say nothing of what 14 million RWNJs will do

(6,555 posts)The name Donald J Trump is on the ballot. The GOP can disavow and disown him all they want. We vote for parties from convention, Constitutionally, it's the individual that wins or loses. If "Donald J Trump" wins the election, no matter who the GOP pretends it is, it is *his*. You could only adjust that by convincing the electoral college to vote for someone else. The House only gets involved if the electoral college can't get a majority.
Any attempt to cause any of that could and likely would result in a suit to invalidate the action and very likely found in Trump's favor, which could create some major disruption/distraction. But yes, this is actually part of the reason for the electoral college in the first place.
But in any case, to override the clear desire of voters, and then force him off the ballot will have major consequences. It's a losing strategy, no one would be dumb enough to agree to it and try to be President. Too late for any sort of campaign or prep, to say nothing of not being able to get onto ballots.
His followers would likely be trying to take things into their own hands before any of that.

(52,317 posts)they encourage people to vote for the republican ticket no matter what the ballot says.
in the unlikely event that the republican ticket wins, then attention shifts to the electoral college.
most states require their electors to vote for the assigned candidate, though sometimes a few are faithless and vote for someone else. so most trump electors vote for trump, but a few trump electors vote for the new guy, and the few electors from states that allowed a change certainly vote for the new guy.
in any event, the idea is to deny trump 270 actual votes in the electoral college. this throws the election into the house, which then picks the new guy.

(2,542 posts)Have you been paying attention to what kind of person he is? He thinks this is working. He is PROUD of this shit! His non-apology is evidence of that.
The GOP's hands are tied, Trump will not relinquish the nomination for any reason.

(9,148 posts)A what if...what alternative would be availible in such a scenario because I do not know the procedure. So I asked.
Not questioning IF Trump will resign, but how such a scenario plays out in our election laws.
BobbyDrake
(2,542 posts)...the first result is "a presidential candidate quits."
Yeah, it's worth considering, if just to make sure it's actually legal. The GOP has to follow its own rules when it comes to this, and I saw somewhere else that it's death, illness, or quitting, with no other options for replacement. And I bet that having known Putin for as long as he has, just for his own safety, Trump is pretty much poison-proof at this point.

But then that would defeat the reason for beginning the conversation.
I don't mind when a DUer posts a question.
I am more than happy to join the conversation and add what I can or be enlightened by others answers.
I have never told someone who asks a question on DU to Look it Up

(11,175 posts)If, for example,a presidential or vice-presidential candidate were to die a week before the election, so that reconvening was absolutely impossible, neither major party would allow the other party to win by default. Each party allows its national committee to fill a vacancy.
The problem for the GOP is that the RNC can't create a vacancy.

(13,933 posts)And then convince the electors to vote for _______ on December 19
It won't be a successful plan, but that would have to be the plan. But Trump would have to resign and that is really unlikely.

(44,974 posts)Some people already voted and whoever voted fro Trump, voted for Trump. Not somebody else. How could it be justified that vote for Trump is a vote for somebody else?

(13,933 posts)They are really voting for the slate of people who will vote for president. Those people vote on the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December (December 19, 2016).

(92 posts)But if Trump leaves, there will be two Republican candidates splitting votes. The Trump who is on the ballot, and the Pence (or whoever) who is the write-in vote. Those votes can not and would not automatically be combined. If either one of those candidates happened to beat out Hillary, THEN those electors would have the authority to cast their votes for one or the other. But with a split between Pence and Trump, it would be a tough task for either man alone to beat out Hillary...

(2,072 posts)of the electors would not necessarily help the situation for us. If electors started to vote every which way nobody would reach 270 and it would be sent off to the House.

(9,148 posts)I'm certain the Repubs have looked at every possible angle to win this election and this may be their preferred choice, since Trump cannot win by our normal process.

(50,303 posts)to the next highest vote getter: Cruz. The GOP, of course, does not think fairly and would probably move Pence to the top of the ticket and draw names out of a hat for VP. If they were smart, they would cede this election right now and get on about the business of saving their party.
