(59,504 posts)Weird though as Trump and Pence are a ticket
LisaL
(44,974 posts)Especially considering Pence would appear in two places (as VP for Trump and as a write in for president). His votes would be split.
karynnj
(59,504 posts)I seriously doubt that they could get 100% of their voters to both vote for a write in AND vote for the same write in. I know many are saying "Pence", but no one other than Trump selected him.
I suspect that there will be hard core Trump people and people not paying attention, who will simply vote for Trump. This obviously splits the Republican vote. This is truly unprecedented.

(34,857 posts)The way votes are tabulated is by the presidential candidate. If I write in Kaine on my ballot, it's not a vote for Hillary - it's a vote for Kaine. He would get the vote, not the Clinton-Kaine ticket.
If Portman does, in fact, vote for Pence, he'll be doing so by write-in and the vote will go to Mike Pence - not Trump/Pence.
Does that make sense?
There were 136,040 write-in candidates in 2012. I do not have the breakdown of names, though.
Regardless, Pence isn't winning this election by write-in alone.
LisaL
(44,974 posts)He will vote on a machine.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)When we voted electronically, our machines had it. I just never used it. My guess is that you click write-in and type the name of the candidate?
Maeve
(42,288 posts)You have to pre-register as a write-in and that deadline has passed. If there are no write-in candidates approved, no 'write-in' button appears on the touch screen.
I'm a paper ballot judge and I suspect my job just got a helluva lot harder! Paper ballot by choice is an option this election in Ohio.

(44,974 posts)Portman can't vote in other state, being in OH. He will vote in OH.

(13,110 posts)I spoke with the Board of Elections and write-ins are not permitted.
It invalidates the entire ballot.
There is no way to write anything in at the place I vote in Ohio. (local volunteer fire department)
We have touch screens with a paper print out.

(42,288 posts)BUT the write-in candidate must file a declaration of intent AND no one already on the ballot can file a petition, so....yeah, it's a throw-away.
But please do, Mr Portman!

(3,284 posts)convinced that Pence is the greatest candidate ever? He's a big phony who lies all the time and he has all the charm of a used car salesman. I don't get it.
I mean, I get that Repugs have bad judgment, but it's a little shocking how consistently awful their choices are. Did they learn nothing from the last shitshow of a year?!
karynnj
(59,504 posts)I think it is because they think he is the legitimate alternative because he is the VP. However the VP was simply selected by Trump. Forgotten is the fact many did not want to run with Trump and Pence was facing a possible defeat in his reelection.
I think the Republicans may be doomed either way. Trump will lose or any alternative will lose just as badly as the hard core Trump fans may stick with him or not vote.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)obviously come out way, way ahead of where he would have been had he lost the governorship.
If, IF, American conservatism rediscovers its soul and its morals, leading good leaders to step forward and today's bad leaders to be rejected, then association with this dark era could cause Pence to be rejected. As it is, though, instead of being politically dead in the water, he is now a nationally known potential 2020 candidate for president.
sarae
(3,284 posts)I really, really hope that in 2020 the country has distanced itself so thoroughly from this dark period that Pence's association with it will be disastrous for him.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)In fact, one of the first and largest steps they would have to take is to admit that we're people like them who also want a healthy prosperous America, not Satan.

(11,686 posts)Pence is on the SAME ticket there fore if you vote for him you are still voting for Trump. Is Rob Portman stupid?
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)Which he can do and Pence will get the vote. Well, write-in Pence will get the vote. The Trump-Pence ticket would not, in fact, get the vote as in presidential elections, you're only voting for the top of the ticket when you cast your vote.
LisaL
(44,974 posts)Write in candidate must declare 72 days before an election and Pence didn't declare.

(44,974 posts)Those are the rules for OH. It's too late for Pence to be a write in candidate.

(14,449 posts)Conservatives say all the time they voted for Sarah and not McCain in 2008 because they weren't crazy about McCain. They still voted the ticket but say they voted for Sarah and not McCain. Portman will vote the ticket but in his weird mind is only voting for Penske. It's BS.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)He could be lying and ultimately votes Trump anyway, so, we'll never know. But he specifically means he will write Pence in as opposed to voting for the Trump/Pence ticket. That's completely different than voting for the ticket but saying you're only doing it to get Pence as VP.
If he does stick to his word, his vote won't go to Trump.

(13,110 posts)I would think Rob Portman should know this.
It invalidates the entire ballot.
I called my Board of Elections for the answer to write-in questions.
My voting place, (local volunteer fire department) has touch
screens with a paper trail.
How could Rob Portman not know this information ???
LisaL
(44,974 posts)Pence didn't do it, so he can't be a write -in candidate.

SamKnause
(13,110 posts)How do you utilize the write-in option on touch screens ???
LisaL
(44,974 posts)Pence didn't declare himself as a write in candidate and now it's too late.
Are you getting geared up for SNL ???
I am.

(34,857 posts)LisaL
(44,974 posts)Time has passed to declare a write in candidacy. So Portman could vote for Pence or Bugs Bunny. It wouldn't count.

(42,288 posts)"A list of eligible weite-in names of candidates and offices will be provided by the Boadrd of Elections. If your form contains no names, your location has no write-in candidates and therefore no 'Write-in' button will appear on the voting machine screen"
There will only be a 'write-in' button on the touch machine IF there are eligible write-in candidates for that precinct (for the state, in this case, since it is a presidental election). Then there will be a pop-up keyboard that will allow you to input the name of the candidate.
LisaL
(44,974 posts)in button for him won't appear. So there is no way to mount a write in campaign for Pence at this point.
Maeve
(42,288 posts)And if he chooses paper ballot (by choice is an option this election), it still won't count, even if it makes him feel better.

(1,345 posts)Pence isn't the candidate. Would a vote for Pence in reality be a vote for the republican ticket?
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)Since apparently Ohio law requires you register as a write-in candidate before the election.
It would not count as a vote for Trump/Pence. The only votes that count for Trump are votes specifically for him - not his just for his running mate.
