2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAre you going to boycott Walmart on black Friday?
I am. I hope all of their workers go on strike and I plan on supporting them by doing my business this Christmas at K mart and Toys r us. I am going to start grocery shopping at a small town grocery store and pay a little more. I am tired of the big companies screwing their workers and screwing the Country. How many Walmart employees have to suppliment their incomes with foodstamps and medicaid, because Walmart refuses to work them at 40 hours per week and pay them a decent wage?

I boycott ALL stores on Crazy Friday.
and on Saturdays
down here, the best shopping time is between 9 and 11 on a Sunday morning.
People are either in church or too hung over from Sat. night to be shopping that early.

(25,415 posts)I have major agoraphobia when I get in the middle of a huge crowd. Like panic attack triggering. I have never shopped on Black Friday ever.
And Walmart is pretty crappy too.

(794 posts)We've been boycotting black friday for years. The holiday season is for family togetherness and being thankful for our blessings as Americans- only recently has thanksgiving become the launching point of all-out retail exploitation of the American consumer and culture. Wall mart, K mart and the other retail monoliths are almost wholly responsible for this awful friday explosion of ill will and consumer buying frenzy. Stay home with your family for the thanksgiving holiday; it's the gift they would prefer.

(2,679 posts)I try not to go shopping for anything on black friday, if I don't have to I don't leave the house. Sometimes on Thanksgiving we might go watch a movie in the evening - might try to see Lincoln.

(9,893 posts)I've ever been in a store on Black Friday was when I worked retail. Back in the day it actually wasn't that bad. Certainly many more days closer to Christmas were more crowded. That was when it was just a busy shopping day. Now when it's become a retail Bastille Day you couldn't pay me to be there. Online is the way to go for me.

(1 post)No. I'm not. And you know why?
Because I'm flat broke and I have three kids who I try to get things for, at least one big thing each Christmas, so they don't have to hear it from the other children.
Christ, I sound like such a scumbag saying that, because I'm all behind solidarity of the proletariat and supporting those who are just looking for a fair shake. But the economic fact for me is it's either Walmart's low prices based on what is essentially blood money, or a very depressing Christmas for my children. It's a hard fact of life to have my ideals butt heads with the reality of my economic situation.
So what will I do? Well...I'll do what shopping I can elsewhere. Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of nowhere, and Walmart forced the smaller competition around me out of business, and I just don't have the money for the gas to drive to the next town with smaller options, so this may be very little elsewhere.
I'll show up with coffee, with soup, and with business cards to offer my assistance free of charge where I can.
But a boycott?
Christ, I wish I could.

(3,168 posts)... and get better prices than Walmart. I am beffuddled by your argument, especially when you state that you are fully aware Walmart shoved all the small businesses out if town.

(9,314 posts)and WalMart is the only viable option from some things. I do most of my shopping online when possible but sometimes I need to see an item before I buy it. Not to mention groceries. I can drive 12 miles to WalMart or 30 miles to Kroger, so yes sometimes I do shop at WalMart.

(38,317 posts)As I write this the shoes I'm wearing are looking ragged and I haven't yet found a better pair in the thrift stores.
If I'm lucky I'll find a pair of comfortable shoes in my random wanderings before I'm forced by necessity to venture into some horrible department store.
