When Donald Trump loses, and loses bigly

How will that affect the direction and make-up of the Republican Party moving forward?

If the race is close, I could see that his supporters would view it as a victory of sorts, and continue to gash the establishment GOP, attempting to reformulate it in their image.

If he is trounced on election day, though, the establishment element of the party would seem to have the upper hand.

In either case, the in-fighting at the RNC will certainly neuter their effectiveness and reach for several years, beyond 2020 even.

It's a good time to be on the winning team.

And that specifically means taking care of the rabid basket of delusional deplorables
that the GOP has nurtured with conspiracy laden hate crap for the last 20 years.

As in, "he will lose bigly".

Please remember this in the future.

Just with a sexist angle this time.

All those Republicans that were with Trump and withdrew? They're just going back to the original plan. They don't believe in drawing boards or maybe, just maybe thinking of a different way to make things work.

Or will they excise it, and force it to form its own political entity?

Either way, it's a clear path to victory for the Democrats.

They tried the consummate political insider and GOP old time stalwart in McCain 2008

They tried the consummate Chamber of Commerce polished CEO with political experience in Romney 2012

They tried the consummate political outsider and populist bigot in Trump 2016

All major parts of the party faithful. All major losses.

There's really one Rep bloc they haven't tried yet. McCain barely mentioned evangelical Christianity in passing. Romney was a magic underwear heretic. Trump tries, but Dawkins would do a better job of faking a genuine spiritual conversion. Going back to their "successes" Bush was one of the godbotherers but never made it the center of his campaign OR governance for all his favorite philosopher drivel and Crusade rhetoric. Words, but little priority.

My guess is they'll try to combine Trump's deplorable base with a real full-on fire and brimstone crusader to get out the church crowd, pull back even more of the white Catholics, maybe even peel off some evangelical minorities. As we all know, there's no crazy like Gawd crazy for motivating folks. Their only problem will be finding one who has the credibility, but can avoid repelling social moderates and committing the numerous gaffes of a Trump. Can't just go to the Duck guy to get Trump + God. Wonder if Rick Warren could be pulled from the pulpit?
