2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAre Men Like Trump Afraid of Vaginas?
For a while now, Ive been a casual feminist. Ive got Roxanne Gays Bad Feminist on my nightstand. I follow Gloria Steinem on Twitter. I rant about Donald Trump being a misogynist on Facebook to my 653 closest friends. But in all honesty, until recently, I looked at feminism as an intellectual exercise. Its great to have a movement to get equal lady rights, but the contingency of men out there who really dont think much of women cant be that big, right?
It is. When nearly half the country is ready to support Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton as our nations leader, a megalomaniac who has a long history of saying really shitty things about women, there is clearly still a problem with sexism in America. Hes proud of his strong daughter, but has also said hed probably date her if he wasnt his daughter, clearly highlighting that he values women as sex objects that are designed to bring satisfaction to men, instead of, you know, being people. (Note: saying that youre proud of a strong female daughter as a man is totally ok; saying youd bang her under different circumstances is creepy.)
Why is anyone listening to him? It blows my mind on a daily basis that anyone who is a sane adult would support a man who has vocally supported banning Muslims in a country founded on religious freedom, building a wall to keep immigrants out in a land where almost none of the populations families have been here more than a couple hundred years, and suggested that a foreign government hack into the email of his opponent which is totally illegal and possibly treason. His entire platform is not to make America great again, but to make it wholly un-American.
Why are people supporting him? The only thing that I can rationally point to is that a woman president is too scary for many men in this country.
Are guys really so afraid of people with vaginas that theyd rather elect Donald Trump than an intelligent woman? I know it comes down to more than that. Theres policy (which has largely been unreported this election cycle), but in the same way that race was so not the issue in 2008 for conservatives, Im sure gender has no sway in this race. (If my dripping sarcasm wasnt clear, Ill be explicit: gender and race played heavily in 2008 and now in 2016, and that is wrong.)

He lost.
I'm not afraid of vaginas but I definitely fear disappointing them... And voting for Trump would disappoint most of them.

(34,845 posts)When he ends the skit with, "What's it like?", that, to me, rings true about a lot of ultra-Conservatives. They approach sex like it's some sort of 30,000 ton Godzilla moment instead of, you know, fun.
They can't experience fun so the ultimate avenue to fun (for most of us, I think) -sex- is forever unknown to them.
Why else are Shaun Hannity and his ilk always so angry and unhappy?

(13,783 posts)... Betty Friedan published The Feminine Mystique. I've seen so much change. But this election cycle has made it clear that there is an enormous amount still to be done. Maybe it's a good thing that we've had an opportunity to see clearly what's been fulminating under the surface (from the perspective of a comfortable educated female), just as we've been given the opportunity to confront continuing racism no doubt prodded to the surface by Obama's election.

(90,692 posts)Just picking on last night: he said Hillary has terrible hate in her heart. We know this is a lie. We also know it is Trump himself who is consumed with hate.
Trump speaks for men who also have castration-anxiety, and now we know what percentage of the American population that is. Among other things, they feel emasculated by the American economy, where jobs for men with muscles are almost obsolete and women have encroached on all of what used to be "men's jobs."
They are afraid to death of strong women. Women are beings who bleed and do not die, and the adolescent boy who lives deep inside thinks there must be some terrible witchcraft involved. Women have no penis, and the two year old who lives deep inside wonders what happened to it and did it hurt and could it happen to him.
Women's sexuality can be frightening, too. Her "thing" grabs and pulls at him, and ... well every single culture has a folk tale about the vagina dentata, the vagina with sharp teeth.
This election has become all about gender and all about fear and loathing of strong women, and making sure women know their place.
DU Men who are reading this -- this is not about you. And thank the Goddess it is not about anyone I am related to. But watch Donald Trump stalking Hillary Clinton across the stage. Listen to him demean women whether or not he has an audience. Listen to him talk about his wife and daughter as though they are inanimate objects. Listen to the roar of the hungry crowds.
Part of me wants to feel compassion and even pity for the men (and women) who follow him with such fervor. I'm a Democrat -- hey, let's talk about social programs and better schools and training for the new economy and Long Range Programs for these poor souls.
But the rest of me knows that Donald Trump must be stopped NOW, Right Now, or there won't be a tomorrow worth the name.
