(11,949 posts)While I do not think much of the guy, why should he be in jail?

(3,635 posts)and has always been a man of principle and integrity, who sometimes has had differences of opinion to that of his party (and who was mostly a reliable vote for his party). That isn't a crime, but his right as an American.
"No people have been more outrageously denied an equal opportunity to live out the American dream than African-Americans, from the brutal stain of slavery to racial segregation by law to the two-tier society we still live in. Before I got into politics, my first act of public service was in the civil rights movement. I marched with Dr. King 40 years ago, I went to Mississippi to fight in 1963 for the right of African Americans to vote. It pains me to look back to 2000 and realize that though we eliminated the laws that stopped African-Americans from voting, they all were not allowed to vote in Florida. Im going to talk about race and keep marching with Dr. King and his spirit for jobs and freedom and equality until the dream that Dr. King enunciated 40 years ago is fully realized. This is from my heart. This will define my presidency." -Sen. Joe Lieberman, 2003.

(18,402 posts)Much as I have disagreed with Lieberman on many issues in the past, to suggest he should "be in jail" is as low as Donald Trump. Please name something the man ever did that amounted to a crime (and no, "saying stuff" is not a criminal offense in this country).
Please remember: when they go low, we go high. We don't emulate them down in the mud.

(11,607 posts)It was a source of pride for many of us. I subsequently grew to like him a lot less as he grew more conservative and especially after he endorsed McCain. But I am happy to have whatever support we can get. I agree that I don't want to see him in the administration.
Even though he is loathed among progressive activists, I think he is relatively well respected among moderates and independents, so he might be helpful with more than just Jewish voters.
I stopped liking him a while ago but have continued to defend him over the years from attacks on this forum and others that I found to be flatly anti-semitic.

(11,607 posts)What he killed, allegedly, was a late in the game proposal to allow people 55 and over to buy into Medicare. And I had a nagging suspicion he might have been taking one for the team on that.

(3,635 posts)basically the McCain of our side, who is respected by moderates and independents. He's also someone who can appeal to the elderly and Jewish voters. Makes sense why they would use him in FL.

(11,607 posts)I don't particularly want to see him in the administration, though I could see him being useful in certain minor roles. I think he might be effective as a middle east envoy because he has some credibility among the right wing government in Israel that many US leaders do not at this point. From what I understand, he was surprisingly received pretty warmly by Arab leaders in the region when he visited years ago as well.
I think he is mostly an honorable person even if he is way too far right for me politically. I am glad to have him back on our side.

(9,970 posts)...Al picked Joe. But, I was wrong... looking at history, the "safe" pick is usually the best pick when looking at VPs. Gore should have picked Richard Gephardt and run as Clinton without the sex.

(489 posts)When he tagged along with McCain throughout the 2008 campaign it made my stomach turn whenever hearing his name mentioned. But if he wants to help elect a Democratic president, particularly when the alternative is such a complete train wreck.
