2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSanders Will Keep Pressure on Clinton
Sen. Bernie Sanders, a loyal soldier for Hillary Clinton since he conceded the Democratic nomination, told the Washington Post he plans to push liberal legislation with like-minded senators with or without Clintons support if she is elected and to aggressively oppose appointments that do not pass muster with the partys left wing.
Sanders said he and other senators have started plotting legislation that would achieve many of the proposals that fueled his insurgent run for president, including a $15 federal minimum wage, tuition-free public college, ending mass incarceration and aggressive steps to fight climate change.

(30,058 posts)he should place his attention. I am hoping he is going to find others to work with in order to get the laws passed and then on to Hillary to sign.

(58,785 posts)chairmanship if we regain a majority in the Senate, and Bernie's response indicated that he would accept--not an automatic given, given the traditional schmoozing, fund-raising duties of chairmen, which he'd no doubt "redefine."

(58,785 posts)(which means he actually despises most of his aware, kick-ass Democratic supporters). Whatever! Because, reality is, he's pulling from the left just as we all are. Even those of us who don't feel he's the right stuff for the oval office should admit that that has worked very well for our party and appreciate their contributions to the success we're all striving for.
I suggest working on tolerance and acceptance, which are supposed to be our peculiar virtues (as opposed to the deplorables and their hapless partners on the right)--as well as on closed primaries.
Bernie's been insulting Democrats for a half century. He's NOT going to change, but he and his far-left followers of course fit in our widely diverse Spandex coalition, many of whom badmouth Democrats just as badly.

(28,343 posts)I am deeply appreciative of his efforts on behalf of her campaign, I LOVE some of the great things he is saying and doing to help HRC and Dems up and down the tickets.
I FULLY support his efforts to promote the election of strong liberal Dems and forward, progressive change in this country - but I believe this expression was somewhat unfortunate on his part.

(364 posts)that Hillary is not the enemy here. It is good that he will fight for what he believes is the right thing to do, and push legislation - but he could have done that with Obama. It is unlikely that he will get exactly what he wants because the country is not there. I know there is a lot of passion, but it is about 25% of the country (50% repubs don't like his ideas, and half of dem party is not too keen on it - as evidenced by primary). So it's not a matter of pushing the most leftist of ideas because of your passion. This is democracy and other people's opinions, whether or not they are as intense or articulate as you - still counts.
For anyone expecting Hillary to adopt all of Bernie's ideas on day 1 - it will end in disappointment. She will be a compromise candidate (imho), but will move the needle left for all the issues.

(18,402 posts)gave Sanders a little spanking in his column, for starting and pressing the whole "rigging" business and contributing to de-legitimatizing Clintonsomething that certainly will persist into her presidency.

My guess: as the legitimately elected POTUS, she will do what she thinks is right, and he, as one of 100 senators, will do what he thinks is right. As it should be: that is how our government is supposed to work. And then majority rules.

(58,726 posts)One of Obama's problem is that the far left kind of left him hanging and didn't support him enough. Having Bernie on board to do that should help immensely, especially if we can get him and Warren some key chairmanships.

(54,447 posts)Let Bernie start in with this kind of talk AFTER the election. The primaries are over, even if some of his supporters (and about 65% of Republicans) wish they could start primary season all over again.

(30,481 posts)Sanders, put on your leading shoes and get some great progressive legislation on her desk to sign.
I'll be pushing Sanders to get it done and holding Clintons feet to the fire. The only way to do it.

(6,979 posts)And I have absolutely NO problem with this. Hillary HAS gone further to the left on several key issues and I thank Bernie for speaking with Hillary and for her deciding to MOVE onto more progressive ground on these issues. Bernie is a fighter, and I fully expect him to fight to the end, but we need Bernie and he needs us (D).
However, I don't want to get too far out there with an agenda where it begins to start too much disunity within the party, and as President, Hillary does have every right to start in on her agenda, as she will be the president. ALL things in GOOD time. All things in good time.
Now, if Hillary has a Democratic Senate to work with, and we can chip away at the large number of tea-baggers in the Congress, then that's another story all together, and maybe we can implement several more progressive ideas into the mix a bit earlier which I'm sure will benefit Americans all across this country.

(5,648 posts)I expect Hillary to get things done in Washington. If that means compromising with the Republicans to get legislation passed, so be it. However, since Sanders supporters don't want him to compromise anything they may not be pleased.

(5,648 posts)... or she can keep the vast majority of the people who are neither on the far left nor the far right happy, guess which one she will choose. Then again you will be far happier with Hillary in the White house then suffering under Trump for four years.

They will pressure HRC so she finds it toxic to turn right or towards Wall St.

(19,974 posts)vital for the moderate Democrats like Hillary that the platform must be implemented, to prove to the Millennials that the Democrats are straight up. However, it's important for the Sanderistas to understand that if the Democrats don't win the Senate AT LEAST, then it will be another "shut down the government" by the Republicans.
