Dems demand apology for Kirk comments on Duckworth's heritage

Dems demand apology for Kirk comments on Duckworth's heritage
By SEUNG MIN KIM 10/27/16 10:50 PM EDT

Republican Mark Kirk invoked Democrat Tammy Duckworth’s ethnicity as she explained her family’s military background during the Illinois Senate debate Thursday – prompting an outcry from national Democrats who called Kirk’s comments a “racist” attack.

Duckworth, a veteran who lost both her legs fighting in the Iraq War, was making a case for having a senator who has fought in a war when she detailed her family’s lengthy military background.

“My family has served this nation in uniform going back to the revolution. I am a daughter of the American Revolution. I’ve bled for this nation,” Duckworth said during the debate. “But I still want to be there in the Senate when the drums of war sound because people are quick to sound the drums of war and I want to be there to say this is what it costs and this is what you’re asking us to do.”

When asked to respond, Kirk appeared to be dismissive of Duckworth’s heritage, saying: “I forgot your parents came all the way from Thailand to serve George Washington.” There was no response from Duckworth, and after a few moments of silence, the moderator moved onto the next question.

The guy who sacrificed nothing is accusing the vet who sacrificed a lot of a lack of patriotism. He also is projecting Tammy's mother's ethnicity onto her father, who traces his American colonial ancestry back to before the Revolution.

Kirk won't apologize at this late date, but he will suffer at the polls for it, which is better in the long run. Tammy isn't the only vet in Illinois.

Their handbook states: "It's not who did what that counts, but who shouts loudest." It's a version of Lenin's old observation: that a lie, shouted loud enough and often enough, becomes the truth. From Hitler to McCarthy to Murdoch to Limbaugh, it has worked time and time again--never permanently, but enough to cause irreparable damage.

It has been a success formula that has made Rupert Murdoch billions over the years, and elected hundreds of unqualified people to the Senate, the House, state legislatures and many Governors' mansions.

Kirk's Republican party leader, role model and presidential candidate - Comrade Donald "Five Military Deferments" Trump (R) - has stated emphatically that American soldiers who get captured while defending the USA and who become prisoners of war are "losers."

The ongoing mouthy Republican disrespect for people who actually served is beneath contempt and frankly unpatriotic in the extreme.
