2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHere's a scene from multiple Republican living rooms everywhere:
Husband: You ARE voting for Trump, right?Wife: Oh, of course, dear...(fingers crossed behind back)
Husband: I'm serious. Trump has to win. He'll make America Great Again!
Wife: He sure will, dear...(rolls eyes after turning away)
Husband: Well, that's good. No wife of mine would ever vote for Clinton.
Wife: Yes, I'm sure that's true, dear...(repeats divorce lawyer's number silently to self)

She lives at more conservative area but works at college with liberals. Should have met a husband there.

Fortunately, most people do not make the mistake of marrying people of a very different personality orientation, though. I.e., liberals marry liberals, conservatives marry conservatives, even if they're so young they can't describe a difference and even if they never care about politics.

(146,317 posts)just vote for Hillary and say nothing about it. That's sort of what the surveys of early voters is showing, I think.

(16,245 posts)I hadn't realize that's still a (backwards) thing.
Well, I suppose fundamentalists who still believe women have no brains might do this, but even semi-enlightened folks elsewhere don't put up with this crap.
No way I would anyway. My partner and I don't disagree on much but we agree to disagree (like on whether Peter Thiel's destruction of Gawker was a good thing. He thinks it was, because Gawker was no better than any other tabloid, while I think it sets a dangerous precedent. At the time, I'm not sure either of us knew just how big an asshole Peter Thiel really is.)
MineralMan
(146,317 posts)way exists in a lot of households. As I look at the faces of Trump supporters at his rallies, I see a lot of men who are probably authoritarians in their relationships. Not everyone lives in relationships that are well-balanced and independent.

is to be a bit smarter than you look
I've found the easiest way by far
is to look a bit stupider than you are.
The man in one of those households probably has no clue that his wife has an inner dialogue of her own, and it may not jibe with his preferences!

(36 posts)and from a family full of RW nutters and I would never tell her how to vote. I think it's fine for couples to support different parties though I think that really only works out well if the GOP supporter was your traditional Repug and not one of todays crazy Teapub or deranged DT supporter types. Thankfully she's the oddball of the family (really she's the normal one ) and cannot stand the stuff the Right espouses. She gets mad at me for even having MSNBC on she hates DT so much.

(2,573 posts)personality etc. This describes my sister. She used to be quite liberal but over the years of hearing her husband she has gradually moved to his views. I tell her that she sounds just like her husband...who doesn't even vote LOL. She was all on board the Trump train but has gotten off a few stops. She hates Hillary but now also thinks Trump is a skank. My last argument to her (we haven't talked about politics in weeks because we end up fighting) was listen...I know you are Republican but you do agree that we shouldn't repeal rights for women regarding abortions. So for that reason alone you should vote the Democratic ticket. If you can't bring yourself to do that then leave the top of the ticket blank or write someone in.
I figure I've won if I can at least get her to NOT VOTE for Trashbag.

(23,677 posts)Really not sure how it started, but I mentioned something good about Hillary. A very delightful woman said oh no, I don't think so or something to that effect, meaning she disapproved of her. I asked her why not, and she said, "My husband said......"
I know this is very vague, it was a very short conversation and I don't remember the specifics. I just remember mentally shaking my head and thinking, "in how many households is this exact same scenario being played out."

(11,175 posts)I suspect there are some men, mainly older ones, who are lifelong Democrats, whose social circle is all Democrats, where it's just assumed everyone is voting for Clinton... but silently the man is feeling uncomfortable with a woman trying to stand up to Putin. At least a few such men will vote Trump or leave the line blank. Nevertheless, knowing that their outright sexism is no longer tolerated, they'll lie about their vote to friends and family.
I suspect and hope that your scenario is more common.

(1,296 posts)I think this is how we can reconcile the fairly dismal poll numbers with the apparently heavy democratic advantage in early voting: the difference is coming from republican wives.

(7,286 posts)I respect her decision as she is a strong willed and independent woman.
Highly educated so I am sure she has her reasons.
Although I think the health insurance premiums increase that just crushed her business had something to do with it.
Based on their Facebook posts, a lot of her female friends and family are or have voted for Trump as well.

Obviously "highly educated" in this case doesn't appear to have imparted a speck of discernment.
Best to you.
Worst to her.

(80 posts)and yes, it gets pretty crazy around here after a few glasses of wine, never boring though. Divorce? almost after I voted twice for Bill Clinton! "W" almost did me in too, but we're still together! Husband knew I was a feminist when he married me and that there is no way he gets to tell me how to do anything! LOL! We are also Christians so I think that helps us to keep from killing each other

But the subject of this thread, as much as we don't like it.... is a fact.
It also goes the other way too (although not as often) where the women are the one dominating the relationship. Just ask my brother about that, or actually you should ask his wife....LOL.
