2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSmell that desperation.
They know this is it. After this, the quick drop down to a rump white nationalist party. Without the Supreme Court -- no more gerrymandering, no more secret foreign money, no more cheating, no more quiet felonies beneath the umbrella of a crooked Red State governor.
They'll do anything to stop this, anything at all. Because they don't believe in America at all.
Just power, and the power of greed.
They're not going to pull it off. We're too many. Too angry. As angry as they are, and even though they're willing to do things we're not, this isn't 1930's Germany. We're not, at heart, a weak culture.
They are. And they're going to pay the political price for it.
Down you go, darkhearted Throwbacks. Away with you.

(42,641 posts)People like Trump, and Cruz, and Luntz, and Rove, and Cheney are to blame. True, some followers are eager to follow, but many are confused and feel left behind. We must reach out to them and try to speak to their real social and economic concerns.

(5,954 posts)those people are ripe for the picking, if only the Democratic Party would stop being so snooty about things. They're generally (white) working class people who are disillusioned with the decline of the middle class, and (unfortunately) have been hoodwinked by a bunch of assholes who've managed to convince them that it's all the fault of labor unions and latinos. They could be convinced to see the light, if only Democrats would stop sneering at them. *shrug* Just being practical here.

(42,641 posts)Some are racist, some are confused, some are afraid of what they see as a demographically changing US. Hence the relation to the Tea Party slogan of "bring back my country". All the more reason to reach out and try to change those beliefs.

I think only therapy can change that.

(42,641 posts)I have read articles that talk about the "Texas problem", where textbook manufacturers write history to appeal to the conservative Texas market. As a result, a conservative history is taught which lays the foundation for the appeal of FOX news and conservative memes.

(13,776 posts)And they hear a demagogue promise to make everything better--no policy details or realistic caveats, just glittering promises--and they are so desperate that it gives them comfort to believe him.
They may be suckers to believe him, but their pain is real. The gap between rich and poor is so utterly unfair, and getting worse by the year, and they have been left behind. I can see why they're frustrated. (I can't quite see why they blithely overlook, rather than reluctantly resign themselves to, Trump's racism and sexism and bullying, but any port in a storm, I guess.)
If after this election Democrats don't make a huge effort reach out to these people who are hopeless and frustrated, and give them real reasons to feel good about their futures again, that will be political malpractice.

(27,787 posts)Obama tried to reach out to the GOP ... it was the right thing to do ... and they tried to crucify him.
You might as well be a character in the Walking Dead trying to reason with a horde of "hopeless and frustrated" Zombies.

(42,641 posts)And Democrats must also reach out to the farther left Democrats and offer real solutions. Bernie supporters were/are looking for solutions that address the massive economic inequality that most of us experience or know about.
Trump is a con man who has been running his con for his entire life. It is the one thing he IS good at, if good should even be used to describe his predatory behavior.

I'd like to agree with you, but I think they can still do a hell of a lot of damage between now and 2020, when the next Census is due, and the House seats can potentially be redrawn to get rid of the systematic GOP bias of the House.

(1,779 posts)will end republican control over the majority of the American public. You bet! The money boys are seeing the end of their power -- or at lest the diminution of their power.
I am sure glad that Obama is increasing his criticism, the Hillary is doing that too, that the North Carolina voting systems are being reviewed by a knowledgable judge, etc., etc.

(28,270 posts)Hate radio is salivating at the bit to tear into those never Trump republicans! Hannity promises to savage them all.
Drumpf, Alies and Bannon will start up their hatefest in one form or the other, internet channel, TV, radio, who knows?
The deplorables always double down on hate and racism after a loss so I see whats left of that party being tied inescapably to the alt-right nazis, stormfront and the KKK.
And to think this un-american traitorous party started with Abe Lincoln and is now a bunch of dirty gutter street thugs with a thin veneer of religion trying to hide their sins. It makes me sick.
The republican party needs to die, that's a fact.
