2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMark Halperin visibly shaken when Brian Williams calls out his fawning coverage of Trump
Bloomberg co-managing editor and MSNBC senior political analyst Mark Halperin spent much of the 2016 election as a de facto hype man for Donald Trump, often providing uncritical coverage of the Republican nominee. During a panel segment Friday, MSNBC host Brian Williams tore into Halperin for his overt partisanship, arguing hes gone out of [his] way to forge a path for the GOP candidate.
When Donald Trump complains that he is not getting favorable coverage on the MSM, he has not been listening to you this cycle, Williams said. I think youve gone out of your way to find the path, argue for the path, forge the path for him in an argumentative way with your co-host to the nomination.
Tonight I thought you were interestingly optimistic, he continued. Where are you getting the path of positivity laid out on your broadcast? Halperin looked visibly shaken by Williams question, insisting its not a question of optimism but a question of looking at the data. Still, the Bloomberg editor admitted Clinton is overwhelmingly the favorite to win the election.

Brian needs to step it up, his little show had been weak, but is getting better. He's usually better as a commentator than show host though.

(52,791 posts)He's been chastened, and will eventually be stronger for it. Like not giving Mark Halperin a pass.
I thought he got a bad rap. NBC news knew what they had. They loved his persona and the fact that he could go on late night and be funny and tell the kind of stories that celebrities tell on late night. I also think that memory is tricky, especially when under stress and he actually started to believe his memories matched the exaggerated stories he had been telling. It was awful that late night Brian crossed over into Nightly News Brian but I thought a lot of the outrage was largely right-wing driven ala Dan Rather.

I wish Hillary had used Bloomberg's speech in her ads. People listen to a real billionaire - especially one who is a Repug and hates Trump.

Whatever Williams flaws, it's clear he is a decent person who admires the old school type of reporting like Jennings, Brokaw, Walters, Rather, etc, and sees the media's fawing over Trump as a circus detached from reality.
Williams got excoriated for mistating or misremembering a few facts, while most of the MSM goes about happily on its way making up an entire false reality - and never gets called out for it.

I think he is drooling over the amount of money he is going to make on his next book about this election, which he fully participated in since he has helped push Trump to the nomination.

(5,901 posts)No doubt, Halperin and Heilemann will write another book about this election, as they did in 2008 and 2012. They made too much money not to continue.

I do give Halperin some credit for a week ago today, when he was among the first to say that Comey's move was unfair and unprecedented.
